  2. Regions • Fourty-seven Prefectures in Total • Each of the regions has its own dialects • Weather also varies in each of the regions and prefectures

  3. Flag • Red Dot represents the Sun, hence “Land of the Rising Sun.” • Adopted in February 1870 • Used to be used by samurai and daimyo (lords)

  4. East Meets West • Post World War II – A beginning for a new attitude in Japanese Culture Early Popular Culture: • “Enka”(演歌), a type of music style unique to Japan; “renaissance” of this music • “Anime” (アニメ), the first Japanese animation show Astro Boy by Osamu Tezuka • Seven Samurai (七人の侍 )was the most influential Japanese film nationally and globally, setting up the standards for Japanese cinema • Cuisine (和食); a mixture of Japan’s staple food and food imported from across the seas; tofu, miso, soba, and udon are a few examples of staple foods

  5. Cuisine • Lunch boxes (弁当), wide range of variations of homemade foods (“convenience”) • Rice is the staple food of Japan; it is illegal to bring rice from outside into the country!

  6. Food Tales • Old Tales from Japan say that the moon looked like a rabbit (うさぎ,usagi) pounding up mochi there... • Momotaro (ももたろう) or “Peach Boy” tells of a boy from a giant peach who had super strength and could help defeat the evil Oni (ogre demon)

  7. Language • Hiragana |ひらがなcharacters usually used for domestic words • Katakana |カタカナcharacters used for some names and foreign words • Kanji | 漢字characters borrowed from China to form names and words • Romajicharacters in English that spell into “Engrish”

  8. Street Fashion Certain fashion styles can be traced from different prefectures of Japan(Lolita derived from the Kansai region, etc.)

  9. Kawaii!! | かわいい!! • Did you know…?Japan sent ambassadors dressed up in Lolita fashion wear? It was to show Japan’s pride in everything “kawaii” or cute… ピカチュウ! Hello, Kitty!~
