  1. Common Core Mathematics August 22, 2012 Primary Grades

  2. Eliminate It!!Which would you eliminate and why? • rectangle circle • trapezoid cylinder

  3. Eliminate It!!Which would you eliminate and why? 21 63 17 84

  6. Let’s Start With a Number Routine!

  7. Let’s Start With a Number Routine!

  8. What is a Number Routine? • Short (five to fifteen-minute) intentional mini-lessons • An opportunity for teachers to revisit and extend students’ number sense and basic computation • Repeated experiences for students to communicate about numbers

  9. When Should I Teach With Routines? • Traditionally routines are presented everyday at the beginning of the math class • Many Common Core Standards develop over time and incorporating them into routines will assist with mastery.

  10. How Do I Decide on a Routine? • Let your students drive the routines you focus on • Observing students during a lesson can give valuable information and provide information about which skills need to be revisited. • Whatever routines you choose, your students will gain the most from these routines if they work with them regularly. • Stay consistent alternating between a few routines over time until students demonstrate mastery.

  11. Where Can I Find Examples of Routines? • Grade Level Mathematics Common Core Wiki

  12. Where Can I Find Examples of Routines?

  13. Mathematical Instructional Levels with theCommon Core Standards • Beginning of the Year Instructional Level Placement Recommendations • Groupings • Should be determined guided by this document • Should be made within the first few weeks of school • On grade level classes should include mixed abilities

  14. Instructional Level Placement RecommendationsWhere Can I Find Them?

  15. Instructional Level Placement RecommendationsWhere Can I Find Them?

  16. Now that I have my students tested and grouped, what should my 75 minute math block look like?

  17. What are essential components of a math block? • How do these activities connect to the Common Core? • Which of these items are most important?

  18. What Should My Math Block Look Like?Planning

  19. How will I assess my students on a regular basis?

  20. Formative Assessments are used to inform instruction and provide feedback to students on their learning. • There are a variety of types of formative assessments • They can be done before, during, and after instruction. • They can be given with a small group, individually, or as students work independently

  21. Selected Response Items Observations Conversations Interviews Extended response tasks Journals and reflections Open-Ended Questions Portfolios Exit tickets Reports and projects

  26. Elementary Math Updates • Massive Wiki Updates!!!!! • 120 CC Assorted Review Homework Sheets • Additional After School PD Opportunities (next page) • Math Modules Continue • Teacher/School Data Collection Tools • Parent Resources • SMART Pages • Parent Previews • Parent Updates

  27. Additional PD Opportunities • Number Talks • Classroom Discussions • Calendar Math (non-tenured teachers) • 4 Long Range Planning sessions

  28. Closure!!It’s Sooo Important!!! • ONE thing I will continue to do in my math class • ONE thing I will add to my math class • ONE thing I will eliminate from my math class

  29. Thank you for what you do for our youngest mathematicians.Have a great school year!
