  1. Welcome to Northern Debate Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase social services for persons living in poverty in the United States.

  2. Why Debate???? Why would you join a club that makes you research, write, speak in public and then get criticized by a judge? 4. The reaction you get when you tell people you’re on the debate team 3. Looks good on a college application 2. Skills that last a life time and are used every day. • Believe it or not, its FUN!!!

  3. Welcome to Debate • What’s involved? Reading, Writing, • Speaking • How much time – 1 or 2 meetings per week plus Research and writing on your own time • Competitions – We compete in the SJDL at the Varsity and JV level - Wednesdays - Dec, Jan, Feb 2:30-6:00 at Cherokee High School • Other competitions may be added.

  4. Debate Team Positions • Affirmative Teams • Negative Teams • Varsity and JV • Researchers • Analysts

  5. What happens in a debate? • The affirmative team argues that there is a horrible problem somewhere related to the national debate topic. • The affirmative argues that this problem is caused by our current policies or lack of a policy • The affirmative argues that they have a plan that will fix the problem.

  6. What happens in debate? • The negative team argues there’s no problem. • Or maybe there is a problem but the affirmatives team won’t fix it or it will cause problems that are worse than the original.

  7. It all comes down to evidence. • We don’t believe you! You’re a high school student!
