  1. Social Media and The Cloud

  2. What is Cloud Computing? Cloud computing is a model for enabling on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.

  3. The cloud is composed of… Three Service Models • SaaS • PaaS • IaaS Four Deployment Models • Private Cloud • Community Cloud • Public Cloud • Hybrid Cloud

  4. What Is Social Media? • Social Media is the future of communication. It is an array of internet based tools and platforms that increase and enhance the sharing of information. This form of networking makes the transfer of text, photos, audio, video, and information in general increasingly fluid among internet users. Social Media has relevance not only for regular internet users, but business as well. • Platforms like Facebookand LinkedIn have created online communities where people can share as much or as little personal information as they desire with other members. The result is an enormous amount of information that can be easily created, searched, and shared.

  5. How Does Social Media Work? Cloud computing drives the many social media sites that you access virtually every day. When you realize that you have been using cloud computing every day to send messages, store photographs, upload videos, and much more, the promise of cloud computing brightens considerably. When you upload a video to YouTube, that video is stored in the clouds; when you store your photographs on Flickr or post them to your Facebook page, those photos are stored in the clouds; when you collaborate on a project through LinkedIn, all of your information is stored in the clouds. And being in the clouds means that anyone with an Internet connection and appropriate privilege can access this information—which is exactly what you want when in the cloud.

  6. When it comes to Social Media and cloud computing, the services break out into three main areas: storage, processing, and software as a service (or SaaS). The storage capacity available through the cloud is simply enormous, seemingly endless, and growing every day. Instead of owning and maintaining your own computer storage, vendors offer you the choice of storing your information in the cloud, on their servers, accessible whenever you want.

  7. Software as a Service (SaaS). For users, SaaSoffers the greatest appeal. SaaSdelivers benefits that are simply not available from applications running locally on your own computer. With cloud computing, you potentially have access to applications that you could never own. And a burgeoning number of SaaS applications enable you to create and collaborate on projects with people scattered around the globe simply by basing your information (think documents and proprietary data) in the cloud where everyone can access it.

  8. How Does Social Media Work? (cont.) Social Media works in many ways, but you have to look at it from the communication point of view. Social Media is an instant communication tool to an audience of billion; because the moment you send a tweet, upload a video or post a Facebookupdate, anyone following, subscribing or liking will see it.

  9. Cloud Computing in Facebook Facebookallows you to communicate with any and everyone that you choose…from your parents who may be out of state to your family out of the country. As long as each of you are connected (as friends) you’re able to see what one is telling the other. This way everyone knows what's going on while you plan the family reunion. If you want to keep your messages private you can do that too. Just use Facebook's messaging system to send private messages that only you and the other person will see. Because sometimes you just don't need everyone to know everything…right?!

  10. Cloud Computing in Facebook (cont.) In Facebook, you can organize your friends into groups so that you can keep track of them easier. For instance, put all of your family into one group and all of your high school friends in another group. Or put your real friends into one group and your pretend friends in another group. It’s all stored in the cloud. Organizing groups makes it easier to keep track of people just in case you want to send a group message…just enter the group name.

  11. Cloud Computing in Facebook (cont.) In your settings, you have the option to receive an email every time someone sends you a message…with everything stored in the cloud. This makes Facebook a valuable part of your email and communication service. Photos, videos, links and more can be posted to Facebook and viewed as many times as you like. You and your friends can comment back and forth…all in real time…at the same time.

  12. Cloud Computing in Facebook (cont.) You can also instant message or chat with a friend who is on Facebook at the exact same time that you are on. You can even video chat with your friend. https://www.facebook.com/home.php
