  2. About us • Grant Funded, State organization • Promote CTE in Secondary Schools in our 8 county region • Started Health Occupations classes in 1980 • Today: 5 programs, 9 teachers and 179 students from 18 schools

  3. Our Curriculum • 2 semester program, 1hr 45 min, M-F • 1st Qtr – Theory and introduction to basic skills • 2nd Qtr – Theory and begin clinicals 2 days per week • 3rd Qtr – Theory and clinicals • 4th Qtr – 5 weeks of Rotations, 4 weeks of Chosens • IDPH curriculum is followed and taught more in depth Qtr 1-3 • Qtr4 is designed by the student and approved by the teacher • Students can sit for the CNA exam as early as April

  4. Office costs associated with a program like this • Teacher Salaries • Mileage • Class supplies, equipment, technology • Student Professional Liability insurance • Staff Support (not charged) • Our office charges the expenses to the schools as tuition per student

  5. Program Approval • Need ISBE approval • ISBE Certified teachers • Prove a need for employees in this career area • Need IDPH approval • Paperwork process • Curriculum • Master Schedule • List of Supplies, visual aids • Clinical site with agreement • Instructor training

  6. IDPH and Facility Guidelines • Student to teacher ratio, 8:1 • Master Schedule and any revisions • Flu shots, background checks, health insurance, personal transportation, physical and immunizations, scrubs, TB test • Hospital and nursing home regulations

  7. Qualified Instructors • RN with Long-term care experience • Take week long IDPH Train-the-Trainer Course • ISBE certified – have Educator License with Stipulations • TAP test

  8. Instructor Retention • Quarterly meetings with all of our Regional HOCC teachers • Help them to learn new skills • Classroom technology • Student Relations • CNA Instructor Conference • Alzheimer’s Conference • Office support

  9. Student Recruitment • Ask school counselors to select students • Health career minded students, trustworthy, <10 days of absences, Junior or Senior • All potential students attend a required Orientation session hosted by EFE/instructors • Current students are assigned an in-school recruitment project

  10. Student Responsibilities • Purchase items for class: • Scrubs, white shoes, background check, transportation, flu shot, TB test, CNA Exam, CPR Student Manual • Make up any missed assignments and clinical time missed • Own transportation • Self-motivated

Perks of the Program • Qualify for CNA certification • Learn about a wide variety of careers • Meet professionals in many various career areas that are of interest to the student • High School credit and College credit • See if healthcare is really what they want to pursue before getting a college degree
