  1. 1-Dimensional Motion Only x or y or z coordinates East or West Up or Down Right and Left

  2. Frame of reference must be chosen! • Bus, moving sidewalk, tennis ball in car http://www.phy.ntnu.edu.tw/ntnujava/index.php?topic=140 This will become important discussing relative motion and relativity!

  3. Displacement ≠ Distance(it can, but doesn’t have to!) • Swimming Pool • Displacement Formula: ∆x = xf -xi • By convention… • Right is +, left is negative • Up is +, down is -

  4. Velocity ≠ Speed • Velocity is a vector. • Vectors include both magnitude and direction • 55 m/s east • Speed is a scalar quantity. • Scalars have a magnitude, but no direction • 30 miles/hour

  5. Average Velocity = Displacement/time • Or, • Vavg = ∆x/∆t • Vavg = xf – xi tf - ti • Vavg ≠ vf + vi 2 Example…

  6. When solving problems,Don’t GUESS • Diagram: • Given: • Unknown: • Equation: • Substitute: • Solve:

  7. Demo • Page 44 (2,4)

  8. Assignment #1 • Read pages 10-25 • Problems page 20 (2,3) 25 (5) 28 (17,21) • 32 (7,8)

  9. Assignment #2 • Read pages 40-44 • Page 44 (3,6) 45 (Conceptual Challenge 1,2) 47 (1,3a,3c,4) 68 (8,10) 70 (33) 73 (51)
