  9. SYMBOLS OF CZECH EASTER

  10. Easter whip • The braided whip made from pussywillow twigs.

  11. Easter eggs • Colored eggs with red and other bright colours symbolize health,joy,happiness and new life that comes with the spring.

  12. Easter bunny • The rabbit, or hare, was a symbol of abundant new life in ancient times, and reminds us of spring and new life.

  13. Mazanec • We bake sweet Easter bread with almonds on the top called mazanec.

  14. Baby animals • Baby animals born in spring are also symbols of spring and new life • (lambs, baby chicks, Bunny Rabbits, ducklings )

  15. A HOLY WEEK

  16. Palm Sunday • It reminds of Jesus arriving in Jerusalem on the first Palm Sunday.People waved palm branches, welcoming him.

  17. Holy Wednesday called in Czech “ugly“ • This name reminds people that on this day Judas betrayed Jesus.

  18. Holy Thursday • Also called Green or Maundy Thursday is commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles.

  19. Traditionally in the evening every boys in the village equip themselves with a wooden rattle.The noise can be heard from afar. • On this day we baked “jidáše“ made from white flour and honey.

  20. Good Friday • Friday in Holy Week is the anniversary of the Crufixion, the day that Christ was crucified and died on the cross.

  21. Easter Sunday • Boys make a special handmade whip.This braided whip consits of eight,twelve,or even twenty four pusywillow twigs.

  22. On Easter Sunday we also bake mazanec and a sweet cake shaped like a lamb. Girls decorate Easter eggs to give them to boys on Easter Monday .

  23. Easter Monday • In the morning, boys walk from door to door chase girls on the legs with their whips. Czech Easter is a fun holiday!
