  2. Medieval Art Time period is 400 AD – 1400 AD 3 styles: Byzantine, Romanesque and Gothic Fall of Roman Empire and rise of the Church led to a shift in thought from the “here and now” to the “hereafter”…focus not on the beauty of the human body (Greek/Roman focus) but now a focus on the human soul.

  3. Medieval Art The Medieval Era wasn’t just a time of “dark ages”…there were many bright spots in bookmaking, architecture, sculpture and especially stained glass. The art was used to educate the illiterate public and was very symbolic in nature. It was about man’s place or station in life and the need to focus on the soul.

  4. CHARTRES CATHEDRAL, FRANCE Mass and bulk of Roman architecture was replaced with a light, airy and vertical design.
