  3. What to expect in Literacy • Overall goal: • To enhance the learning of all aspects of social studies through the use of fiction and class discussion.

  4. What is expected of the student? • Active Participation • This is graded. • Completion of an Impact Journal Entry at the end of each class. • We will end class with 5 minutes remaining for you to reflect on any part(s) of class that impacted your learning or understanding.

What is expected of the student? • Value Statement Participation • Almost every day, you will be required to place your “number” on a continuum on the board under the clock. • This must be done immediately and quietly in order to be affective. • After attendance is taken, our discussion will ensue with the teacher as the moderator.

  6. What is expected of the student? • Reading participation • At times you will be asked to read and you will have the opportunities to read aloud. • Be prepared… know where we are and stay with the class so that you can participate in spontaneous discussions.

  7. Impact journal At the end of nearly every class, you will make an entry on any (or all) events of the morning together. • Talk about the value statement and the comments of others • Write about the book we are reading… characters, conflicts, connections you make with him/her. • CARE activities. • Length of entries will vary from 1/3 (minimum) of a page to a full page.

  8. What is expected of the student? • Connection Projects: • When we finish our books, you will be required to complete a written project that illustrates your personal connection(s). • These projects are open to creativity and take on various appearances. • Use your Impact Journals as preparation for your connections.

  9. Literacy Terms of Importance • Setting- Location, time… Answers the question, “Where and when does this story take place?” • Advanced question: How would the story change if the setting were changed? (slight or major) • Plot- The map of the story… beginning, middle, and end… • Advanced: How does the author use the plot to lead from rising action to climax to resolution?

  10. Terms continued • Conflict: The problems that arise among characters… (man v man, man v nature, man v self) • Advanced: What connections can I make personally with any conflict? Do I recognize that the author wants me to make connections. • Theme: The main idea, lesson, or moral a story has to offer. • Advanced: Can I realize and explain multiple themes in one story? Can I translate these themes into other situations? (connections)
