  1. Ephesians 2:1-10 An Analytic Study

  2. Step 1 • Read the passage carefully noting any: • Observations • Problems • References • Possible Applications

  3. Step 1 Applied • O- We were all dead in sin before we were saved (verses 1-6) • R- reference to Satan, i.e. prince of power, spirit at work (verse 2) • A- Stop trying to do everything on my own, for God has saved me • A- Do good works, for we are His workmanship, created to do these things • A- Be thankful and praise God daily for saving me • P- Why would God allow us to be born unsaved if He already knew He was going to save us anyway? • P- How do we have a “choice” to believe in Christ if He already knew whether we would believe or not?

  4. Step 2 • Write the main idea of each verse combine it with the other verse: • Split the paper so the left side has 2/3 of the page and the right side has 1/3 of the page on it • On the left, write the main idea of each verse • Group verses that are similar and write a brief summary of the group on the right of the page

  5. Step 2 Applied

  6. Step 3 • Split the passage into paragraphs, writing the main idea for each paragraph, with subpoints

  7. Step 3 Applied • Paragraph 1, Verses 1-3: We have all rebelled against God • Dead in trespasses and sin • Followed Satan • Lived in our passions • Were like the rest of the world Paragraph 2, Verses 4-10: we were saved by God’s grace • He loved us and had mercy • Made us alive • Salvation, God’s gift to us • We are created to do good works

  8. Step 4 • Pick one of the available applications, indicating the main problem, an example, a solution, and specific things God wants you to fulfill in your application

  9. Step 4 Applied • Applications: I will thank and praise God daily for saving me, having mercy on me, and blessing me. • Problem: I take His love and blessings for granted • Example: I think of things as “my own” without ever thinking of God who has blessed me with them • Solution: In my prayers and thoughts, I will make sure that I give praise to God for saving me and blessing me

  10. Step 5 • Find the pivot word, or phrase, and determine whether the passage is leading to a call to action or is leading to a teaching of doctrine • If it is a call to action: look at verbs carefully to determine the main idea • If it is a teaching of doctrine: look at nouns carefully • Make a T-chart, showing both verbs and nouns, verse by verse

  11. Step 5 Applied Pivot= the word “but” in verse 4. It signifies a change, and leads to the teaching of doctrine, in this case

  12. Step 6 • Find out what the main idea of the entire passage is

  13. Step 6 Applied • Main Idea: We were once all dead in our sins and were in rebellion against God, but He saved us through His grace and in turn we do the good works He prepared for us

  14. Step 7 • Write a title for each paragraph and then for the passage as a whole

  15. Step 7 Applied • Verses 1-3: Our Hopeless Situation • Verses 4-10: Unrequited Salvation • Passage: The Greatest Gift Of All

  16. Step 8 • Using Ch.15, make a diagram of the passage

  17. Step 8 Applied

  18. Step 8 Applied (cont’d)
