  2. Byzantine Period • Lasts from500 – 1453ADin the Eastern Christian world • Constantinefounded a new Roman capitol at Byzantium in 330AD and called itConstantinople. It is now called Istanbul, in modern-day Turkey. • When Rome fell to the Barbarians in 476AD, Constantinople became the center of the surviving portion of the Roman Empire until it wascaptured by the Ottoman Turks in 1453AD. • We will compare three buildings in this time period to see what makes the styleByzantine: San Vitale in Ravenna, the Hagia Sofia in Istanbul, and San Marco in Venice, Itay.
