  1. Chapters 1-4 Vocabulary Review This is a quiet activity. Read the question. THINK of the answer. Never yell out your answer.

  2. science Way of learning about the natural world.

  3. hypothesis A possible answer to a scientific question.

  4. independent variables The one variable that is purposely changed to test a hypothesis.

  5. controlled experiment An experiment in which only one variable is changed at a time.

  6. data The facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through qualitative and quantitative observations. A picture of your data that allows you to visually analyze and compare information

  7. quantitative observation Type of observation that uses numbers, measurements or amounts.

  8. qualitative observation Type of observation that gives a description. May involve taste, texture, shape or color.

  9. International Systems of Units A system of units used by scientists to measure the properties of matter.

  10. mass a measure of the amount of matter in an object

  11. weight A measure of the force of gravity acting on an object.

  12. volume The amount of space an object or substance takes up.

  13. Density ________ is a measure of the mass of a material in a given volume

  14. Anomalous data Data that does not fit with the rest of a data set

  15. model A representation of a simple or complex object or process

  16. Linear graph Line graph where the data points form a straight line

  17. Nonlinear graph A line graph in which the data points do not fall along a straight line

  18. matter Name the vocabulary word. • Anything that has mass and takes up space

  19. chemistry The study of matter and how matter changes

  20. Element Each type of ____ is unique because it has its own number of protons, neutrons and electrons a substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances by chemical or physical means

  21. Atom The basic particle from which all elements are made

  22. molecule A group of two or more atoms held together by a chemical bond.

  23. Matter Vocabulary- Chapter 3 Physical change • Physical properties of a substance change • The identity of the substance does NOT change

  24. Matter Vocabulary- Chapter 3 Chemical change • change in the identity of a substance due to the chemical properties of that substance • Example: firewood becomes ash because it reacts with oxygen in the air

  25. Matter Vocabulary- Chapter 3 Law of Conservation of Mass • states that matter of what you end with is always the same as the mass of what you started with • matter is not created or destroyed in any chemical or physical change • Antoine Lavoisier came up with this over 200 years ago

  26. Matter Vocabulary- Chapter 4 Melting point • Temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid • 0oC

  27. Matter Vocabulary- Chapter 4 Boiling point • temperature at which a liquid becomes a gas • 100oC

  28. Matter Vocabulary- Chapter 4 Freezing point • temperature at which a liquid becomes a solid • 0oC

  29. Matter Vocabulary- Chapter 4 A solid • molecules are tightly packed and vibrate in place

  30. Matter Vocabulary- Chapter 4 B liquid • molecules can slip past each other and have more energy to move

  31. Matter Vocabulary- Chapter 4 C gas • molecules can move more freely around because has more energy
