  1. Movements for Equal Rights: 1970s-1990s

  2. Latinos/United Farm Workers

  3. Problems: • Denied equal opportunities in employment, education, and housing • Poor pay, discrimination, and hazardous working conditions

  4. Accomplishments/Problems Today: • By 1960, most Mexican Americans were employed as farm workers.

  5. 1962, César Chávez: a labor leader starting a union for migrant workers called the United Farm Workers • Worked for higher wages and better working conditions • Believed in non-violent methods • Importance: raised the self-esteem of the nation’s Latino population by making their contributions to the economy and culture more visible

  6. Native Americans

  7. Problems: Conditions remained poor • low incomes, alcoholism, high suicide rates, unemployment rates, and high school dropout rates.

  8. Accomplishments/Problems Today: • Wanted greater responsibility in making decisions with their own lives • American Indian Movement (AIM) or “Red Power” Movement • AIM received rights and property that were taken from them • By 1989, awarded $80 million compensation for lost land

  9. Indian Self Determination Act of 1975: more control and rights over reservations • Supreme Court: Native Americans won a case to determine that they had a right to sue (encouraged groups to regain original land)

  10. Jewish Americans

  11. Problems:discrimination, religious intolerance, voting rights, abuse, and torture

  12. Accomplishments/Problems Today: • established the Congressional Bipartisan Taskforce for Combating Anti-Semitism • Crafts policies to address rising anti-Semitism and to protect Jewish communities • launched the Muslim-Jewish Advisory Council • Organizing coalitions with other faith and ethnic groups building a united front against hate

  14. Problems • Lack of job opportunities, equality with men, and an end to discrimination

  15. Accomplishments/Today • Betty Freidan: wrote the book called the Feminine Mystique, which argued that women did not want to be just homemakers and wanted more jobs and better opportunities. • Feminists: believed women should have the same rights as men

  16. National Organization for Women (NOW) pushed for the Equal Rights Amendment (1972 asked for equal rights under the law and no form of discrimination (it failed) • Roe vs. Wade: (1973) Supreme Court said that it was a woman’s right to terminate (abort) a pregnancy (only up to six months); has faced many challenges

  17. Affirmative Action: laws guaranteeing equal rights for women and minorities, in practice gave preference to members of specific groups when hiring workers or accepting students to college, has faced many challenges today • Title IX: No person shall be excluded based on sex in any education or activity program. Title IX is its impact on high school and collegiate athletics

  18. The Disabled

  19. Problems: • People did not receive support (funding/help) from the federal government • Lacked access to public places due to inaccessible places • Faced a lack of social acceptance because of disability

  20. Accomplishments/Problems Today: • Laws provide/call for the disabled to receive equal treatment • Mainstreamed in schools (able attend regular schools)

  21. Americans With Disabilities Act 1990: (ADA) prohibited all forms of discrimination in employment, public accommodation, transportation, and government services. • Allowed for greater access to public buildings, transportation, and electronic devices .

  22. Homosexual Rights

  23. Problems: • Violence, unequal treatment, discrimination toward homosexuals

  24. Accomplishments/Problems Today: • Raised awareness of violence against homosexuals • Tolerance; Becoming more accepting of homosexuals • “Domestic Partnerships”: recognized for health insurance • received funding for AIDS research

  25. Non-Discrimination Act of 1997 (no sexual discrimination in the workplace) failed to pass • Homosexual Marriages not recognized in most states; continues to change as more states adopt same sex marriage laws
