What is a Prophet? • Spokesperson for God • Pro - on behalf of • Phases - Speaking • A messenger of the covenant • God wants us as his family - so prophets are always calling us into covenants • Role is Prescriptive - he forthtells not foretells • They instruct the people on present and how to interpret the past • Often brought “doom and gloom” messages • Also brought comfort and a promise of salvation.

  3. What do all prophets have in common? • Special circumstances of birth • Dramatic call from God • Protest of the Call • Commissioning from God • Rejection and disbelief by the people • Intercede on behalf of people • See a better future for people

  4. Moses • Ex 2 - drifted in a basket • Ex - burning bush • Ex - 3:11 - who am I? • Ex 4:1 - they won’t believe me • Ex 4:10 - I’m not eloquent • Ex 4:13 - Send someone else • Ex 4:14-17 - gives Aaron to help • Ex 5:2 - to Pharaoh; • Ex 5-11 - to Pharaoh; Ex 32:11 - to God • Promised Land

Isaiah • No special circumstances • Isaiah 6 - he has a vision and God comes to him • Isaiah 6:5 - feels unworthy • Isaiah 6:6 - Touches his mouth with embers from the altar to cure his unworthiness • Isaiah 6:9-10 - Isaiah sees the problem of rejection • None • New covenant that will restore the Davidic covenant

Jeremiah • Jeremiah 1:4-5 - formed in the womb and was consecrated and anointed • Jer 1:7 - God came to him and told him he had been chosen at birth • Jer 1:6-7 - He says he is too young • Jer 1:9-10 - places words on his mouth • Jer 1:19 - God warns him of rejection • Jer 14:7 - he identifies himself with the people and does not point the finger at them • Jer 30-33 - book of consolation

  8. Ezekiel • None • Ezekiel 1 - God comes to him on a cherubim • None • Ezekiel 2:8-3:4 - He is given a scroll to eat • Ezekiel 2:5-6 - warned of the stiff necked people • Ezekiel 11:3 - falls on face begging God for mercy • Ezekiel 34-37 - book of consolation

  9. Similar Prophesies • The 3 great prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel has similar prophesies • All 3 describe the “final age” • What things will be like when the messiah comes

  10. Similar Prophesies • All 3 characterized the final age with 3 points • There will be a new covenant • The mosaic covenant will be abrogated (nullify/invalidate) in some sense • The Davidic covenant and kingdom will be reestablished

  11. 1. New Covenant • Isaiah 55:3 - the new covenant will be an extension of the Davidic Covenant • Jeremiah 31:31 - new covenant will be unlike the covenant he made with their ancestors • Ezekiel 34:25 - new covenant will be a covenant of peace • Ezekiel 37:26 - it will be everlasting

Mosaic Covenant Abrogated • Isaiah 56:4-6 - Foreigners and Eunuchs will be able to worship where they were unable to under the Mosaic Covenant • Acts 8 - Etheopian Eunuch is baptized • Jeremiah 31:31-32 - will be unlike the covenant with their fathers that they broke • Ezekiel 20:25 - old laws are considered no good and don’t bring life

Reestablish Davidic Covenant • Isaiah 9:6 - David’s kingdom reestablished to reign forever • Jeremiah 30:8-9 - they will be slaves no longer to anyone but “David” • Jeremiah 33:14-15 - David’s throne will never lack a successor • Ezekiel 34:23 - the one to come to the throne will be a shepherd - • Mark 6 and John 6 fulfill this • Christ Calls himself the “Good Shepherd” in John 10 • Ezekiel 37:25 - David will be prince over them
