  2. John Muir “Preservationist” • Born in Scotland 1838 • Came to WI as boy • Worked very hard farmsteading with his father • Loved being outside in nature • Very creative, many inventions

  3. John on His Own • His father was very hard to live with • Some inventions were shown at WI state fair • He attended UW • Got a job helping run a small factory

  5. Wisconsin to California • Injured when file pierced his eye • Swore he’d give life to God’s Creation (Nature) if sight returned • Spent 6 years reading,writing & studying in Yosemite

  6. Fought for Wilderness • Founded Sierra Club • Wanted National Park System • Fought for preservation of wilderness areas • Tried to stop Hetch-Hetchy dam project • Died in 1914

  9. Education & Jobs • Yale University Forestry Degree • 1st job U.S. Forest Service N. Mexico • Concerned About Loss of Wilderness • Became Very Sick After Sleeping Outside in Rain • Came Home & Got Job @ Forest Products Lab

  10. Life in Wisconsin • Started Game Mgmt. Dept. at UW • Wrote Textbooks • Raised Family & Lived in Madison • Bought Run-Down Farm Outside Baraboo

  11. The Land Ethic Philosophy • Decided to Try Experiment on Old Farm • Planted 1,000’s of Trees • Fixed up Old Chicken Coup as Cabin • Spent Free Time with Family at “The Shack” • Wrote “A Sand County Almanac” • Died of Heart Attack Fighting Fire @ Neighbors 1948

  15. “Silent Spring” • Worked on Silent Spring for Years • Received Pressure From Chemical Companies to Be Quiet • Finally Published Book • Was Commended by President Kennedy • Died of Breast Cancer 1964
