Making a Compass. There are many different kinds of compasses, but they all work the same way. Our earth is a giant magnet with invisible lines of force called magnetic fields surrounding the planet. These invisible lines run North to South.

  1. Making a Compass There are many different kinds of compasses, but they all work the same way.

  2. Our earth is a giant magnet with invisible lines of force called magnetic fields surrounding the planet.These invisible lines run North to South. Any magnetized needle will try to find these lines!

Step 1: Magnetize the T shaped needle. • Rub the point of the needle 50 times on the magnet. • Rub the back or flat side of the needle 25 times on the magnet. • Make sure the needle is magnetized by seeing if it can pick up a staple. • Step 2: Stick the needle through the styrofoam disk so the flat side is against the disk. It should look like this:

  4. Step 3: Mark the 4 Cardinal Points or Directions - North; South; East and West on the paper bowl. It should look like this:

  5. Step 4: Fill the bowl with water. Step 5: Place the needle and disk in the center of the bowl and observe what happens. Step 6: Carefully rotate the bowl until the point on the needle is pointing towards N for North. You now have a compass!

  6. Finding Directions on your Boston Harbor Chart If the top of your chart is North, where are the other 3 cardinal points or directions: South; East; and West? Find Uphams Corner on the chart. It is on the far left hand side, about in the middle. The Winthrop School is not far from Uphams Corner. When we went to Thomson Island, we left from Columbia Point, which is also near Uphams Corner. What direction is downtown Boston from Uphams Corner? What direction is the Boston Harbor from Uphams Corner?

  7. Find Thompson Island. Now find Deer Island, near the top of the chart. What direction or combination of directions would you go to get from Thompson to Deer? Find Georges Island, which may be our destination in the spring. If we are on Georges, what direction must we go to get back to Columbia Point?
