Hurricane Katrina • Effected the majority of Eastern United States • August 2005 • Fatalities Confirmed 1833 • Damage 108 Billion dollars. • Health Risk • Lack of Water, Food, Shelter and Sanitation • Food poisoning, dehydration • Respiratory illness, diarrhea The Disastrous effects of hurricane Katrina can be compared to the devastation of the Dust Bowl era.

  4. Mother’s Day Tornados • 15 Tornados in Georgia • May 2008 • Fatalities 2 • Damages 125 million dollars • Health Risk • Contamination of drinking water • Lack of shelter • Lack of food

  5. Flood of 1994 • Georgia • July 1994 • Fatalities 18 • Damages 58 million • Health Risk • Contamination of drinking water • Loss of shelter • Food

  6. Invention • The invention of a survival kit to hand out to children to help aid in the prevention of malnutrition in the wake of a natural disaster.

  7. Survival Kit • My Survival kit would contain items for: • Water Purification • Fire • Protein • First Aid • Shelter • Clothing

  8. Water Purification-One tablet will purify 1 liter of water. A minimum of 2 liters of water per day is need for survival.

  9. Fire Flint fire starter This fire starter is an easy way to start a fire.

  10. Protein • Tuna Pouches • Jerky • Dried Beans • Protein provides longer lasting energy than carbohydrates and is needed to build muscle. Children, especially, need a good source of protein for survival.

  11. First Aid • Hand sanitizer • Band-Aids • Antibacterial lotion

  12. Shelter • Tarp • Rope

  13. Clothing Rain Poncho

Conclusion • My Survival kit would contain: • Water purification tablets • Flint Fire Starter • Source of protein (tuna pouches, jerky, dried beans) • First Aid (Hand sanitizer, Band aids, Antibacterial lotion) • Shelter (tarps, rope) • Clothing (rain poncho) • These items would help children survive until help could arrive.
