  1. Soldier Combat System Integration using the Rifle Input ControlA new control and integration technology for soldier systemsPETER MORANKord Defence Pty Ltd

  2. Today’s soldier needs to operate a number of different electronic devices each with their own separate controls But how do they do this without taking their eyes off task or hands off weapon?

  3. THE PROBLEM • Multiple interfaces and locations • Increased complexity • Increased power & weight • IMPACT ON SOLDIER • Increased mental load • Greater movement & error • Reduced speed of operation • Reduced situational awareness • Reduced safety

  4. US Land Warrior German IDZ French FELIN CURRENT SOLUTIONS • Not programmable or “smart” • Limited growth potential • Change devices – change interface • Limited command set • Multiple locations • Difficult to use: • On the move • Eyes-free • Hand on weapon

  5. Kord Defence and Thales Australia have developed a new technology that provides integrated control for today’s soldier • Simple • From the weapon • On the move • Fast (Instinctive) • One-handed • Head-up

  6. RIFLE INPUT CONTROL • Five button, rugged controller • Mounted on foregrip of rifle via standard Picatinny Rail • Standalone/Integrated • Programmable • Wired or wireless • Internal/external power

  7. SOLDIER SYSTEMS INTEGRATION STA SYSTEM NVG Integration with the soldier C4I SYSTEM CONTROL RADIOS ARCHITECTURE BMS INTEGRATION LETHALITY SYSTEM Weapon TWS Illuminator NAD

  8. OPERATION • Press single or multiple buttons (chords) to operate • Incorporates patented technology: • Chordic graphical user interface (CGUI) For example: PRESS THUMB AND FIRST FINGER • Minimal training required. • Users remember key functions (muscle memory) • Eyes-free operation

  9. BENEFITS • Speed of operation: > x 2 • Response time: sub-second • Situational awareness: > double • Cognitive load: significantly reduced • Training: 12-16 functions in 1 hr • Movement or noise: minimal

  10. STATUS • Partnership with Thales Australia • Australian Army assessed working prototype • RIC integrated into design of new Austeyr rifle (F88) • Soldier trials - December 2009/ March 2010 • Ruggedised RIC Trial units developed • Production prototypes (TRL 8) ready mid 2010 • New forms under development – handheld/body worn
