  1. Know Your Roots:Word Choice ACTIVITY: 1.21

  2. Where do we get our English words? • Many of our English words come from ancient Latin and Greek words. A word root, or word part that carries the basic meaning, often appears in more than one word. Therefore, knowing the meaning of a root is a key to recognizing meanings of unfamiliar words. In other words, knowing the meaning of one root might help you know the meanings of many words.

  3. Graphic Organizer: Brainstorm as many words as possible that contain the first three roots on the graph.

  4. ON YOUR OWN: COMPLETE THE GRAPH.

  5. WRITING PROMPT: • On a separate piece of paper, write a dialogue between Icarus and his father that might have taken place if Icarus had survived the fall. Use 8-10 words from the chart above. Be sure to write dialogue using correct punctuation and capitalization.
