Mission The University is committed to diversity as a vital characteristic of an optimal education and workplace.  The University maintains a firm conviction that it must strengthen the diversity of its communities, support free expression, reasoned discourse and diversity of ideas, and take into account a wide range of considerations, including but not limited to, ethnicity, race, disability and sex, when making personnel and policy decisions. The University is committed to periodically evaluating progress made toward diversity and to communicating the results of such evaluations. Based upon these assessments, the University will give diversity factors consideration to ensure achievement of its mission of instruction, research and service and gain the broadest benefits for the University community. The Charge to the PCD • Advise the President on issues, policies and practices that affect the University of Kentucky’s commitment as a champion of diversity • Report regularly to the President and the University community on the status of issues of diversity at UK (on matters of racial and ethnic diversity in employment, working environment, compensation and campus leadership • Offer recommendations to redress all forms of racial and ethnicity-related inequities, that is , making recommendations for enhancing the University’s recruitment, retention and graduation on minority students in all of its programs, and for enhancing the institution’s recruitment and retention of minority faculty and staff • Propose initiatives to ensure racial and ethnic diversity at the University of Kentucky which full engage faculty, staff and students in the creation of a campus that is inclusive, that is, cultural affairs, communications, curriculum, extra-curricular opportunities, and community affairs

The Dream & the Challenge: Nurture Diversity Strategic Goal V Nurture diversity of thought, culture, gender, and ethnicity Key indicator Ability to meet the enrollment and persistence goals of the Kentucky Plan for Equal Opportunities in Higher Education and the employment goals of the University Affirmative Action Plan.

Accomplishments of the Commission • Established and operationalized the Commission, its structure, charge and mission • Developed university-wide initiatives with eighteen specific recommendations relative to the faculty, staff and student status of historically underrepresented populations at this institution • Proposed and sponsored the "Bucks for Brains" summer research initiative for undergraduate students • Developed and launched the PCD website : www.uky.edu/PCD • Assisted in the preparation of a senior level community relations and outreach initiative whose goal is to achieve the participation of culturally diverse individuals through planned programs established with the Vice President for Academic Outreach. • Cultural Voices focus group study • Sponsored the university’s commemoration of 50th anniversary of Brownv. Board of Education Supreme Court decision
