- In 3200 BC the tablets now incorporated more elaborate pictures that represented the natural object. - In this simple form to represent multiple forms of the same object they would merely draw the object as many times as required.

- In 3100 BC, the language had evolved to the point where coherent messages could be transferred.

- The symbols were still of basic nature. And were written vertically.

In 3000 BC, the writing style changed from vertical to horizontal (left to right). As a result all the symbols were rotated 90 degrees counter-clockwise.

- In 2900 BC many pictographs began to lose their original function, and a single sign would have various meanings depending on the context. This reduced to amount of signs used in the pictographic language and writing became increasingly phonological.

The Sumerian Cuneiform started to display phonetic elements. For example: A picture of an Eye

  • May also stand for “I”, ie. Oneself.

- In 2400 the strokes used to compose the symbols, changed to wedge shapes. This was due to a change in the shape of the stylus used for writing these symbols.

- The name cuneiform originates from the Latin word Cuneus, meaning ‘wedge’.

- The symbols became more obscure, consisting straight, wedge shaped lines. It was hard to identify them from their predecessor of 3200 BC. This was to increase the speed with which the symbols could be written.
