The most sought-after gem and one of the four most precious gemstones - Ruby, has a special place in the hearts of all, celebrities and royalties alike. Prior to modern gemology, in the 19th and 20th centuries, the lovely spinel was popularly identified as corundum, as they are often found in the same mines as gems of that mineral, namely - sapphires and rubies. It is worth knowing though that the minerals these gems are formed from, are chemically distinct. Spinel is a variety of the mineral spinel group for which it shares its name.
