  1. Skills Training Session September 9, 2014

  2. Agenda • Blood pressure review • Palpation blood pressure method review • CPR review • Practice • Homework

  3. Vitals • Blood pressure • Eyes • Lungs • LOC • Skin • Respirations • Pulse • There is a field for vitals in the run report forms, however it is useful to provide pertinent/abnormal vitals and SAMPLE items in your narrative.

  4. Blood Pressure • No sound? Don’t panic! Check for the following things: • Stethoscope ear bud placement (ear pieces must be angled forward in ear canals) • Kinks in the stethoscope tubing • Check bell of the stethoscope by tapping it to see if functioning properly

  5. Palpate BP • When? • When pt’s BP cannot be determined from the stethoscope (last resort) • What does it give us? • A quick estimate of systolic BP without the use of a stethoscope • How? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZC5_QVbCPQc

  6. CPR - Adult • Unresponsive and not breathing • C-A-B -30 compressions  2 breaths (head tilt-chin lift) -compression rate = 100/min (to the rhythm of “Stayin’ Alive”) -Deliver 2 breaths lasting 1 second each with BVM (C/E grip) • 2-inch depth of compression • AED • Recovery position

  7. Infant CPR • Compression ratio • 30:2 ratio • Differences with adult CPR • You will perform chest compressions one finger below nipple line • P EDS mask and only use a “puff” of air for ventilation • General rule: if you can’t decide if the patient should be classified as an infant or not • if it can fit on your arm, then treat as an infant

  8. Practice • 60 second test • Deliver between 95-105 compressions to practice proper rhythm • 2 minute test • Perform a full cycle of CPR with 30:2 (5 CPR cycles)

  9. Homework • Take 10 blood pressures (in STS/OH) • Take 5 palpation blood pressures (STS/OH) • Check eyes for PERRL x3 (STS/OH) • 2 full practice CPR scenarios

  10. THANK YOU
