  1. Japanese Values in SCRUM • 和、わ, wa:is… the center of the Japanese Heart (日本心). • The value taught in Japanese schools from 1 grade on… • No janitors. The Japanese school children clean their own school. • The peer pressure that is the cultural foundation. • For you to find your place, fit in, and participate. • The antithesis of individualism. • Essential for self-organizing teams. • Mindful to not cause shame and inconvenience to others. • harmonious, peace, Japan, “congruent” • 頑張る、がんばる、gambaru: to work hard and patiently. • One promotes和as one works hard as everyone is working hard. • Work assignments are to the group, not individuals • Taught in school 6 days a week ~ 10 to 12 hrs: School, Clubs, & Cram School • Work day is 40+ with 50 to 70 typical based on seniority. • Everyone can do everyone else’s job. “Jack-of-all trades” over specialization. • Only Japan keeps track of deaths from overwork (過労死、かろし、karoshi ) • Reason Japan achieved: • World class naval power in 49 years from a feudal state! • An average IQ of 111. 10% have IQ > 130
