  1. AMSR-E Science Software Status • New AMSR-E Sea Ice Drift Product • Product Maturity Code • Expected Science Software Updates • Additional Activities AMSR-E Team Leader Science Computing Facility

  2. AMSR-E Science Software Status • L2A Brightness Temperatures V11 • January 2011 • Updates to accommodate Land Atmosphere Near real-time Capability for EOS (LANCE) processing • Last algorithm updates • Version V10, April 2009 • Compute a checksum from Latitudes, Longitudes, and Tb's, attach it to the L2A file as a global attribute, and report it in the QA file. This aids in corrupted file recognition. • RSS added the glint angles of the DirecTV 10 and 11 satellites to the Geostationary_Satellite_Glint_Angles field.

  3. AMSR-E Science Software Status • L2B Ocean V07 • July 2010 • Updates to accommodate LANCE processing • Last algorithm updates • Version V05, April 2007 • Improved beamfilling correction to account for different footprint sizes of different frequencies • Include a new expression for the rain column height that yields more accurate rain flags (the third byte of the Ocean_products_quality_flag), which identify the proximity and intensity of rain; useful for quality assessment of SST and wind speed (the meanings of the flags have not changed)

  4. AMSR-E Science Software Status • L2B Land V10 • July 2010 • Updates to accommodate LANCE processing • Last algorithm update • Version B03, June 2005 • Minor modification to the soil moisture QC • L2B Rain V11 • July 2010 • Updates to accommodate LANCE processing • Last algorithm update • Version B06, June 2005 • Improve low coastal rain rates

  5. AMSR-E Science Software Status • L3 Ocean V05 • July 2010 • Updates to metadata to accommodate LANCE processing • Last algorithm updates • Version V04, May 2010 • RIF Filtering • DirecTV; this affects the United States west coast and the Caribbean Islands • Atlantic Bird 4 in the Mediterranean Sea • Ascension Islands and in the Gulf of Aden • Update RFI filter for Hotbird/Astra • Update Aral Sea filters • Include the RFI angle grid in the product

  6. AMSR-E Science Software Status • L3 Land V07 • July 2010 • Updates to metadata to accommodate LANCE processing • Last algorithm update • Version B03, May 2005 • Correct grid projection parameters

  7. AMSR-E Science Software Status • L3 Snow V10 • August 2010 • Updates to metadata to accommodate LANCE processing • Last algorithm update • Version B05, November 2005 • Update the forest cover ancillary files. Two MODIS products are now used to help correct for forest attenuation. • The daily product retrievals are now performed on the AMSR-E individual Tb samples which are then averaged to the EASE-Grid 25x25 km northern and southern hemisphere projection grid. • Retrievals are calibrated for snow depth with a snow density climatology file used to convert snow depth to snow water equivalent.

  8. AMSR-E Science Software Status • L3 Rain V07 • April 2011 • Improved quality check on input data date • Last algorithm update V06, April 2008 • Skip duplicate (overlapping) scans in consecutive L2A files • Improve L2A Brightness Temperature binning for monthly ocean grids • Update the leap second ancillary file to include the leap second which occurred at the end of 2005

  9. AMSR-E Science Software Status • L3 Sea Ice V13 • July 2010 • Updates to accommodate LANCE processing • Fixed bug in code that calculates the sea ice concentration difference arrays • Reminder: major change in V12 (February 2010) • Store multiyear and snowmelt masks within the 12.5 km product. Subsequently the intermediate mask files can be regenerated from the product when (for example) processing out of sequence. During normal operation, if masks are more than seven days old, processing stops without making a product. However, if a previous 12.5 km product is given on the command line, the masks within the product will be used, processing will continue, and the metadata science quality flag will be set to Suspect if the masks are more than seven days old.

  10. New AMSR-E Product • L3 Sea Ice Drift B01 • Delivered to TLSCF December 2010 • TLSCF • Integration and test • Metadata and QA routines added • ESDT reviewed and updated (coordinated with NSIDC) • DAP delivered to the SIPS March 2011

  11. New AMSR-E Product • L3 Sea Ice Drift B01 • Polar Stereographic grids containing speed and direction for each hemisphere • Derived from AMSR-E 89 GHz 6.25 km resolution Tb’s • Uses the 6.25 km and 12.5 km AMSR-E sea ice products as input • Uses a 5 day window, so that for each output day it requires the current day, the two previous days and the two following days • Currently working to add a browse image

  12. AMSR-E Science Software Status

  13. Product Maturity Code • Included in the file name • Valid values are “P”, “R”, “B”, “T”, and “V” • “P” denotes a partial file • Formerly indicated preliminary files available at NSIDC • Preliminaries have now been discontinued because LANCE data is available from the SIPS • Now used in LANCE processing • Indicates a partial daily file • Cumulative, each pass is added to the current partial daily • Available from the SIPS

  14. Product Maturity Code • “R” denotes a near real time file • Created during nominal LANCE processing • Available from the SIPS • “B” denotes a beta standard product • Initial phase of standard product development; currently sea ice drift is the only beta product • Available from NSIDC • “T” denotes a transitional standard product • Intermediate phase of standard product development; none currently • “V” denotes a validated standard product • Final phase of standard product development • Available from NSIDC

  15. Expected Algorithm Updates • L2A Tb’s • RSS reprocessing based on RSS V7 • Expect update based on V7; for standard products and LANCE • Reprocess complete data set (L2A, L2B, and L3) • L2 Ocean • Expect update based on V7 • Significant changes • L2 Rain • Update expected by September

  16. Expected Algorithm Updates L3 Sea Ice Drift Add browse L2 & L3 Land L3 Sea Ice Land / Ocean Mask

  17. Additional Activities • LANCE AMSR-E real-time processing support • New delivery of all DAPs to SIPS • Update metadata generation routines and the L3 science software to recognize the product maturity code “R” for real-time processing • Update the metadata input pointers to accurately reflect the product maturity code • Support the SIPS in LANCE verification effort • Compare with standard products • Quantify the differences • Support the SIPS in the Karma / Provenance development

  18. Additional Activities • Collaborated with NSIDC to update the ESDT collection descriptions for all AMSR-E products • Various troubleshooting issues at the SIPS during routine processing • Documentation updates and reviews both for the SIPS and NSIDC
