  2. Welcome to Baylor and to Houston Fourth largest and most diverse US city. Only 18 days per year with temperatures ≤ 32° F. More than 11,000 restaurants. World-class performing arts and museums, including the nation’s top-ranked children’s museum. Sports: Astros, Rockets, Texans, Dash, Dynamo, Livestock Show and Rodeo. More than 40 colleges, universities and institutes. NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Texas Medical Center is the world’s largest biomedical complex, including 21 hospitals and 10 academic institutions.

  3. Timeline and History 1900 Founded as the University of Dallas Medical Department. Became affiliated with Baylor University. Joined the newly formed Texas Medical Center in Houston. 1948 Michael E. DeBakey, MD, joined the faculty as Chair of Surgery. 1949 Established the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. 1969 Separated from Baylor University by mutual agreement to become an independent institution.   7. Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center Private Adult Hospital Jointly owned and operated private adult teaching hospital, part of the CHI St. Luke’s Health system. Medical staff includes full-time Baylor faculty, as well as community physicians. New McNair campus hospital. Outpatient component, which Baylor owns and operates independently.

  9. Research: Improving Health Through Science, Scholarship and Innovation First in NIH funding in Texas; 19th in the US. Seven departments rank in the top 20 in NIH research funding (Genetics is ranked no. 1). Resources include 26 Advanced Technology Core Laboratories.

What Is The Promotions Process? • Baylor has two “tracks” (tenure and non-tenure) • All appointments and promotions at the Associate Professor level and above are approved at an institutional level. • Process is initiated by department Chair • Faculty Appointments and Promotions Committee Academic Council (approval) • Board of Trustees (final action) • Tenure = Expectation of continued appointment as long as duties are satisfactorily fulfilled.

Your Areas of Excellence • Most faculty members develop strength in a primary and at least one secondary area of excellence. • Examples • Research and education (basic sciences investigator who works with graduate students or provides course instruction) • Research and patient care (clinician who conducts basic or translational research) • Patient care and education (clinician who works with students, residents or fellows) • Patient Care Single Mission Pathway (non-tenure track) for clinicians >80% patient care; requires clinical excellence plus excellence in leadership, quality and safety, business development or recognized clinical expertise.

Faculty Advancement • Areas of excellence (research, education and patient care) have different expectations and requirements. • Awards help document excellence. • Education (Norton, Rose, Fulbright Faculty Excellence Awards) • Patient Care (Early Career, Star and Master Clinician Awards) • Scholarship and service are important.

Important Policies • Tenure clock • Person at rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) must be considered for promotion to rank of Associate Professor within nine years. • Tenure clock suspension • May be requested for up to 12 months (see FAP Policies, page 8). • Team Science • Consideration of essential contributions to multiple team projects (FAP Policies, page 19).

  23. Strategies for Success Build your network of internal and external colleagues. Keep in mind that you may have several mentors and guides (clinical practice, research, work/life balance). Ask for guidance or assistance when appropriate. Learn about what is expected of faculty members in your area, field or discipline—so that you can build your expertise and document your contributions. Use your annual faculty evaluation to discuss your goals and a timeframe with your supervisor.
