  1. Executive Summary • Our school is in need of newer, more environmentally friendly resources. • Resources that are frequently used by both staff and students alike are printers and computers • Several initiatives will be undertaken to make our printers and computers more environmentally friendly: - Purchasing duplex printers so all printing is double sided - Purchasing a binder to create exercise books for students from the unused print outs - Setting the default search engine on the computers to “Earthle” • Our aim is to reduce paper wastage, save energy and money while also raising awareness of how easy being green can be.

  2. Identifying the need • A survey of 50 students indicated that paper wastage was our most pressing issue • Our school only has a few duplex printers which is resulting in us wasting 10,000 sheets of paper per month! • Not only are we not printing duplex, but we also print paper and leave it uncollected. • We need to fix this problem because: a) It’s harming the environment b) It’s a general waste of paper, ink and money c) It is something both staff and students use every day as well as something they can then change in their homes as well

  3. Objectives • We want to reduce the amount of waste created by purchasing 15 duplex printers, a binder and using more energy efficient and awareness raising internet resources such as Earthle. • Short term benefits: Substantial savings in paper and money • Long term benefits: • Environmental awareness • Cost reductions in paper, student and staff print credit and exercise books, • Reduced paper wastage which willsave trees (almost 2 a year!)

  4. Methodology • 1.Research Duplex printers and binders and see what’s cheap, available and environmentally friendly • 2. Check how many printers are feasible for the school. • 3.Consult computer technician about setting up Duplex printers and changing default search engine to Earthle. • 4.Discuss paper, ink/toner and other printing statistics with the schools office ladies. • 5.Inquire about where to donate former printer • 6. Gain approval from the Principle and school board for our idea. • 7. Follow up on Duplex printers and make the purchase • 8. Continue to raise awareness of printing duplex and using ‘Earthle’

  5. Evaluation COMPARE – Before and after • Amount of paper used per month • Money spent on purchasing paper • Power usage before and after defaulting ‘Earthle’ • Amount of people influenced to use ‘Earthle’ at school and at home • Amount of people influences to print duplex at home (Where possible) • Total number of trees used from paper usage

  6. Evaluation Table

  7. Budgeting • The contingency fund will cover the difference needed to purchase eco- friendly ink, paper and toner (as these are already ongoing costs covered by school). • Left over money will go towards other green initiatives and our school’s environment committee budget.

  8. Qualifications

  9. Qualifications

  10. Timeline • After awarded grant- - We plan to immediately contact Dick Smith and purchase the duplex printers so we can begin cutting down paper usage by 50%. • - We plan to buy a binder so we can save even more paper by creating booklets straight away from paper we have collected. • - We will talk to Taz, our computer technician, and change our default search engines from Google to Earthle. • - In the following week we will hold an assembly informing the whole school of our project and teach both staff and students how to use the printers correctly, where to place scrap print outs, and about Earthle.
