  4. Brains are Designed for Survival Scan the environment Data Information Action Reproduction Survival It feels good

  5. It’s the Same for Learning Learning must be authentic and realistic Scan the environment Data Information Action We only pay attention to what we perceive as useful to us Inspire your students!

  6. Brain Research Tells us How People Learn All learning is brain-based. There is no other sort of learning! Each brain is unique It’s hard to undo a wrong concept Everyone will learn in their own way Disconnecting neurons is difficult Neurons need to connect to existing neurons Need to build on something known Concrete examples are best (Constructivist theory)

  7. Information = Understanding

  8. Important Brain Locations Nucleus basali Amygdala Septum Globus pallidus Hypothalamus Nucleus accumbus • Chemicals • Acetylcholine • Dopamine • Enkephalins • Endorphins • Adrenaline Remember these!

  9. All learning involves emotions and feelings We are social animals Multiply 67 x47 = 3049 = 3149

  10. The Learning Cycle Sense Integrate Act Sense

  11. This Fits Nicely with the Felder Model Sense Integrate Act • Preferred Action • physical • reflective • Preferred Organisation • inductive / constructivist • never deductive No action = no learning! Sense • How we gain understanding • sequential • global • Preferred Data • observations, facts • ideas, concepts • Preferred Sense • visual • verbal No engagement = no input = no learning!
