  1. Citizens are seeking public decisions that are less adversarial and less short term in outlook. • The newdemocracy Foundation researches and publishes alternative democratic methods that seek to deliver this. • We pursue alternatives more likely to identify common ground, end the continuous campaign and return representatives to a focus on issues, not opinion polls. • We are not a thinktank – we fund practical trials. • We don’t need better politicians. We need a better system.

  2. Who We Are • Non-partisan, non-issue based. • Research Foundation with DGR status. • Leading academics, practitioners and former politicians. • Present all alternatives for innovation, fund their practical trial and research their impact.

  3. Engaging the Community • Who is “the community”? • Engagement or peacekeeping? • The nature of inquiry submissions. • A change in tone.

  4. What Changes Make a Difference? • Adding deliberative processes as part of everyday policy formulation. • Critical elements: Random Selection Time Information The blank sheet Clear remit and authority. • How can we visibly earn public trust?

  5. It Works. • City of Canada Bay: • 31 of 32 randomly selected citizens sign up to 84 point plan to change service levels and funding structures. • NSW Parliament Public Accounts Committee – Inquiry into Energy Generation • two juries reach unanimous positions… in a highly contentious topic area.

  6. Seed Idea • What hard problem could you open up to a sample of the community? • One example: In what circumstances would you be happy to see Project X go ahead in your area? • Would this likely yield a more trusted, usable set of options?
