  10. What kinds of Apps do you use?

  11. Chicago Transit App - Greater Good Studios • They are creating a new mobile app for navigating public transit. • Philosophy of bringing all of the different types of transit apps into one. • “Kickstarter” - crowdsourced fundraising

  12. Three ways it is different • They are creating a new mobile app for navigating public transit. 1. It integrates bus and train. 2. It uses real-time arrival data (where available). 3. It’s designed and influenced by people who use it • New iPhone/iPad will not have Google maps • Apple Maps will have driving & walking – NO TRANSIT • Who wants to use 20 different platforms • One platform is better if it is well designed

  13. What will this app do? • Focus on many aspects of trip as opposed to plain schedule data. • It could let you pay your fare without taking out your wallet. • It could tell you whether you'll get a seat on this bus, or to wait for a seat on the next one • It could wake you up right before your stop • It could know you were traveling with a stroller or mobility device, and give you a route with elevators at every stop • It could keep track of how much gas you've saved, so you could justify those new shoes! • The mother of all transit apps, all rolled into one.

  14. What will this app do cont’d • It could integrate with weather, and remind you to bring an umbrella • It could include a coffee shop pit stop on every morning trip • It could sync with your calendar, know you had an appointment, then work backwards to tell you when to leave the house • It could give you great transit-related excuses whenever you were running late • It could help you find locations for bike parking/rentals, car-sharing, taxis • You could send complaints to transit, so they could improve access • These are just a handful of ideas that could be a part of the app • Participate!

  15. NJ TIP’s Environmental Analysis App • In Development with Rutgers and an App Developer. • Structure in place for reporting barriers? • Funded by NJDOT to help resolve barriers. • Collected info could be used for reports. • Database of pictures • Notes • Designations

  16. Template for an Environmental Analysis Note • [Client e.g. Bob Lablaw] begins at [Origin e.g. 9100 Broad St. Anywhere, NJ 00001 ] • There is/are [amount or distance] of [type of surface e.g. Steps, Grass, Stone, Pavement, Concrete] between the individual’s origin and the [Sidewalk, Transit Stop]. Picture (This item could be repeated for each walkway/sidewalk/road/street crossing etc. along route)

  17. Template Cont’d • The individual must wait at transit stop [stop id number, cross streets or coordinates station name e.g. 10009] for the [route number e.g. 107X or Morristown Line] to [Destination e.g. South Orange]. Picture • Place to wait or sit for inclement weather or extended wait [i.e. Dunkin Donuts, Municipal Building, Rail Trestle etc.] Picture • Issues with Transit stop, shelter, elevators, platform. Picture

  18. Types of Barriers will be noted • Physical Barrier in Route  • Social Barriers • Signage Barrier • Physical Barrier at or around transit stop • Variable Barrier • Street Crossing Barrier • Traffic Signals

  19. Possible Resources Information could filter out to be used for other resources such as: • Picture Book • Text Based Trip Plan (add schedule info when appropriate) • Case Note Template • Instruction Completion Template • 27 Skill Sets Checklist • Complaint form templates
