  1. University of Utah Chief Resident Immersion Training (CRIT) in the Care of Older Adults & Leadership Skills Development Retreat Program Directors Retreat 2013 Megan Fix & Katherine Anderson

Background • The CRIT program was originally developed in 2003 at Boston Medical Center • Disseminated to 26 programs nationally with 10 new programs being added in 2014 • University of Utah held our first annual CRIT retreat May 31st – June 1st of 2013 at Snowbird • All costs for chiefs and faculty are covered by the CRIT Grant and cost sharing with the School of Medicine

Attendees • 14 chief residents completed the training • Represented Programs • Chiefs: Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Neurology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedics, Anesthesia, Physical Medicine and Rehab, Ophthalmology, and Psychiatry • Faculty: Geriatrics, Emergency Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehab, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Family Medicine and General Surgery

Goals • Foster collaboration among disciplines in the management of complex older patients • The secondary goals: • To incorporate geriatric principles into teaching and administrative roles as CRs • To develop leadership/teaching skills • To be able to collaborate with other disciplines in the management of the complex older patient • To develop an achievable project to be carried out during the CR year • To have fun and foster collegiality

Feedback from Chiefs • “The only opportunity we (chiefs) have had in residency to interact with other specialties outside the hospital” • “Broke down barriers between programs” • “Allowed chiefs to talk about similarities and differences in their programs to better understand each other and their approach to patient care issues” • “Leadership skills sessions were very valuable in helping chiefs think about how to approach administrative issues they will deal with in chief year”

  8. 14 Action Plans were developed • Majority focused on patient safety e.g. recent M&M with Emergency Medicine & Geriatrics • Action plans should be completed within the first 6 months of chief year

  9. Planning for 2014 • Open to all residency programs at UofU • October: survey PDs to select dates • Jan - March 2014: need names of chief residents and faculty that will be participating • April 2014: registration opens • May/June 2014: CRIT retreat • residents must be excused from ALL clinical duties during the retreat
