  4. Evaluating Expressions with Exponents Helpful Hint An exponent applies only to its base. For example: 5 is the base to the exponent 4 Multiply -1 times four factors of 5 Parentheses indicate that -5 is the base to the exponent 4. Multiply four factors of -5 = (-5)(-5)(-5)(-5) = 625

  5. Helpful Hint Don’t forget that 2⁴, for example, is not 2∙4. The expression 2⁴ means repeated multiplication of the same factor. 2⁴ = 2∙2∙2∙2 = 16 whereas 2∙4= 8
