  1. What is volume?

  2. Volume describes the amount of space an object takes up • The basic unit of liquid volume is the liter (L) • The basic unit of solid volume it’s cm3 • 1 mL = 1 cm3 (of water)

  3. How is the volume of matter measured? Volume of matter can be measured in several ways: 1. Linear Measurement—Formula—L x W x H = volume of a cube or rectangle—used for objects with regular (cubic or rectangular prism) shapes

  4. 2. Liquid Volume Measurement —to measure the volume of a liquid use a graduated cylinder.

  5. Water Displacement is used to measure the volume of irregularly-shaped objects, such as a rock, marble or a body. The object displaces (pushes aside) the volume of the object which is submerged in (under) the water. The water which rises up in the cylinder is equal to the volume of the object.

  6. Archimedes! • Making connections:What happens to the water level when you get into a tub of water? The water rises up when I get in a tub; how much the water rises is equal to the volume of your body which is submerged in the water.

  7. How to use a graduated cylinder—a graduated cylinder is used • Pour liquid into graduated cylinder carefully • Read the volume at eye-level.

  8. Read the volume from the bottom of the meniscus A meniscus is a slight downward curve of the liquid caused by friction Meniscus (read from the bottom of curve)
