  2. Asexual vs. Sexual • Asexual Reproduction: • Requires 1 parent • Allows rapid reproduction • Less genetic diversity  Why a problem? • Parthenogenesis: only females! Rarely occurs… • Sexual Reproduction: • Requires 2 parents of different sexes  Is this a problem? • Creates new combination of genes  Genetic Diversity

  3. Hermaphrodites Contain both male and female organs! OR Can convert from one sex to another! Some species produce eggs and sperm at the same time Other species: change sex as they mature * These species DO NOT fertilize their own eggs!

Keeps eggs moist! • Mammalian Strategies: • On land & water • Nourish with mother’s milk • Includes: Monotremes (eggs inside body), Marsupials (pouch), Placental mammals
