  1. Monday, June 10, 2013 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

  2. Application vs. Anchor Task Application problem: Students solve a problem using mathematical knowledge that they already know. Anchor Task: Students solve a problem where the solution pathway is not immediately apparent. They may need to learn additional mathematics in order to solve the problem.

  3. KHSD Math bridge materials Common Anchor Tasks Optional Supporting Tasks for PLCs Culminating Task for Assessment

  5. do not replace Direct Instruction

  6. complement and enhance Direct Instruction

  7. Anchor Task Template InstructionalDesign Template

  8. Anchor Task Template Develop Mathematical Intuition 1 Students will be presented with a context or situation where they will be asked to guess or predict: “What happens next?”

  9. Anchor Task Template Explore the Task 2 Students will explore the task’s context, make observations, and gather relevant information.

  10. Anchor Task Template Model with Mathematics 3 Students will organize the information with tables and graphs. They will then mathematically model the situation with diagrams, numerical quantities, variables, expressions, and/or equations.

  11. Anchor Task Template Apply the Mathematical Model 4 Students will formulate evidence-based predictions based on their multiple representations. They will evaluate their original guess.

  12. Anchor Task Template Communicate Mathematical Reasoning 5 Students will precisely summarize their mathematical reasoning in words. They will share their own solution pathway and critique the reasoning of others.

  13. Anchor Task Template Formalize the Mathematics 6 The teacher will use direct instruction to generalize the various student approaches. The mathematics will be formalized in a rigorous manner, as required by the content standards.

  14. Anchor Task Template Extend the Mathematics 7 The teacher and students can extend the discussion, pushing the mathematics above and beyond the learning targets of the task.
