  3. Life in New Spain Additionally, the Spanish built missions. These missions were designed to convert the Native Americans to Christianity. They were also effective as centers of trade, which helped the Spanish earn money. The presidios were forts that were built by the Spanish in the Southwest area of the United States. presidio mission

  4. There were 21 presidios in total There were also many missions These missions were economically beneficial to the Spanish because of trade. There was much work to be done. Who do you think the Spanish had do all of the work?

  5. The Plight of the Native Americans In order to turn a profit and sell the most goods, the Spanish made the Native Americans do all of the work for them. They built the missions, farmed the land, harvested the crops, and made clothing. All of this work and they were barely treated better than slaves. In exchange for their services, they received a modest amount of food, clothing and shelter. After a few years of this oppression, what do you think will happen to the Native American population in California? Why?

After years of horrible treatment by the Spanish, Native American population decreased in California. • Some Native Americans tried to escape for better life on different land. • The most significant (biggest) reason for the decrease in population was the spread of disease that emerged from horrible living conditions. • Measles and Smallpox were among the diseases spread and killed a large percentage.
