The purpose of tonight‘s meeting is to discuss the HORIZONS Curriculum. • Curriculum Goals *To enrich, extend, and accelerate learning in gifted learners’ areas of strength. *To help students discover new interests. *Units correlate with classroom standards *The subject matter is advanced

  3. Instructional strategies are designed to: • Emphasize higher-order thinking, problem-solving and communications skills • Foster self-initiated and self-directed learning • Promote creative application of ideas • Model and encourage academic discussion

Make-up Policy: (Guidelines for Missed Assignments during Gifted Resource Classes) • HORIZONS students are to be held responsible for mastery of all standard curriculum objectives. • In most cases they will be excused from daily and related homework assignments given while attending HORIZONS class.

  6. Class Rules: • Be respectful. • Be responsible. • Follow directions. • Be punctual. • Be organized. • Be a self-starter. • Be prepared.

Units of Study: • Logic Puzzles (warm-up activity) • Vocabulary (Wordwatchers) • 2nd Grade {Red Hot Root Words} • - Greek and Latin prefixes, root words, and suffixes • 3rd Grade {Vocabulary Cartoons} • - Uses rhyming and visual mnemonics • Social Studies / Science (Our Georgia/Habitats) • Brain Stations (HORIZONS Standards)

Georgia Unit Focus: • The students will locate major features of Georgia and will describe how these features/locations define Georgia. • (Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia) • The student will read about and describe the lives of historical figures in Georgia history. • Life Science: • Habitats • Features of organisms of Georgia
