  2. Agenda Topic 1 Topic 2 Topic 3 Math Science and Social Studies Writing and Spelling Homework/Grading/Communication/Expectations CATS Goals/Depth and Complexity, Habits of Mind Reading Topic 4 Topic 5

  3. Math In this class our mathematical approach mostly follows: Concrete - Pictorial - Algorithm/Equation -Algebra and Patterns -Problem Solving -Discrete Mathematics -Number Sense -Fractions, Decimals, and Percents -Data Analysis -Geometry -Measurement -Structure and Logic • Mathematical concepts are introduced first using manipulatives; students then use words and pictures to represent and solve problems; finally the students will learn to develop several equations. • Math is taught through whole group instruction, small group reinforcement, and cooperative learning groups. • Students are encouraged to make connections between math concepts and real world applications, using problem solving and looking at multiple ways to solve a problem. • Math Acceleration Project (Brain Honey) will be implemented this year to help differentiate instruction.

  4. Common Core Critical Areas: 4th Grade • Developing an understanding and fluency with multi-digit multiplication and dividing to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends • Developing an understanding of fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers • Understanding that geometric figures can be analyzed and classified based on their properties (parallel sides, perpendicular sides, angle measurements, symmetry, etc.)

  5. Science and Social Studies Students will receive a MS, P, or AC for both subject areas. Science Social Studies • Earth Science – Rocks and Minerals • Physical Science – Light and Sound • Life Science – Ecosystems and Adaptations • Scientific Method (Inquiry) • Science Fair will occur in December and January – group project. • Civics/Government • Communities/Geography • European Explorers • World History (Greece, Rome) • Economics

  6. Reading Reading strategies and skills: • Comprehension • Vocabulary including prefixes, suffixes, and roots • Cause and Effect • Drawing Conclusions • Sequencing • Predicting • Forming Inferences • Comparing and Contrasting • Questioning and Clarifying • Elements of Non-Fiction/Text Structure (50/50 fiction/non-fiction) • Main Idea and Details • Fact and Opinion • Author’s Purpose • Literacy Block – Daily 5-CAFE • Read to Self (DEAR) • Read to Others (Read aloud) • Guided Reading - Strategy or skill mini lesson/practice • Word Study (Spelling) • Work on Writing (Writing Workshop)

  7. Writing and Word Study (Spelling) • WFTB – Write From the Beginning • Focus on Structure and Mapping • Cross curricular • Mini Lessons • Editing and Revising • 6+1 Traits • Ideas • Voice • Sentence Fluency • Organization • Word Choice • Conventions • WTW – Words Their Way • Pattern based spelling program • In class – words are not sent home unless extra practice is needed

  8. HomeworkGrading Class assignments and homework are ultimately the responsibility of your child. Missing class assignments can negatively impact students’ grades. Homework is assigned to improve study skills and will be given an effort grade only. Class assignments scored with points indicate that it was taken as a score in the Gradebooksystem. Assignments with a check, smiley face, or star were intended for practice only and were not entered into the Gradebook. Work not completed in class will be finished during recess or sent home if not completed during recess.

  9. Graded Work Folders • Sent home bi-weekly on Wednesdays • Infinite Campus Portal - The Infinite Campus (IC) Portal will allow parents to login and access student grades. One progress report will be sent per quarter (mid-way) and a report card will be sent home. **Parent directions for IC login are coming …

  10. In Our Class … • We are responsible. • We are respectful of others and their property. • We listen carefully and follow directions. • We have a positive attitude. • We do our best and learn from our mistakes.

  11. Olweus Bullying Prevention Program Along with character traits, Santanimplements a bullying prevention program. The rules the kids are following are: 1. We will not bully others. 2. We will try to help students who are bullied. 3. We will try to include students who are left out. 4. If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home. 5. We will practice each Pillar of Character each day. The Olweus definition of bullying is: “A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself.”

  12. Making Good Choices (Behavior) Positive Reinforcement • Recognition • Praise • Clip Up on chart • Wall of Fame • Cavanaugh Bucks • End of quarter CATS Mart store • Discipline Plan • Clip down 1x (Warning) • Clip down 2x (Teacher’s choice – Time out, Loss of Recess) • Clip down 3x (Parent Contacted) • Detention • Principal/Dean’s Office
