  2. PANHELLENIC SOCIETY OF OTOLARYNGOLOGY - HEAD AND NECK SURGERY (PSO-HNS) * PSO-HNS was founded in 1947 * PSO-HNS has an Executive Council of 9 members (President: Prof. J. Bizakis) * Holds its Annual Meeting in mid-October * Counts 1450 active members * Residents are not members of the Association

  3. Panhellenic Otorhninolaryngologic Society * PSO-HNS has about 8 individual sections

  5. Greece is divided in 13 geographical Peripheriesand in 11 Health Authority DistrictsThe largest is Attica and the second one is Central Macedonia

  6. There are 80 Public Hospitals63 of which have ENT Dpts. (There are 9 University ENT Dpts.)

  7. There are also Private Hospitals but theydo not have the right to train Residents

  8. ENT Doctors in Greece today: • Approx. 1450 specialists (Women 308 21,25%) • Approx. 217 trainees • ENTs/inhabitants ratio: 1/7.793

  9. 988(68%): ENT are doing private practice433(30%): Are in Public Sector 29(2%): Are in University Dpts. Doctors in ENT in Greece today:

  11. UNDERGRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION Greece has 7 Medical Schools:1. Athens (Attica), 2. Thessaloniki (Central Macedonia), 3. Ioannina (Epirus), 4. Larissa (Thessaly), 5. Patras (Peloponnisos), 6. Alexandroupolis (Thrace), 7. Heraklion (Crete).

  12. UNDERGRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION Every year about 900 Medical Students admitted to the Schools UNDERGRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM: 6 YEARS

  13. ENT Residency Program in Greece5 yrs Training Program1 yr General Surgery 3 yrs ENT 1 semester Plastic Surgery and 1 semester Ped. Otorhinolaryngology

  14. ENT Residency Program in Greece32 out of 63 hospitals provide full training,31 provide training from 6 months – 2 yrs.

  15. · There are not exams to start the program.· There are not obligatory exams during the program.· There are final exams to get the specialty ''The EBE-ORL -HNS exam is  recognized as an additional qualification but specialists are not certified with the "Diploma of the European Board of Otorhinolaryngology” ENT Residency Program in Greece

  16. In Greece the Educational and Training system,and the Post Graduate Medical Training Program are managed by the Ministry of Health.

  17. Recently the Health Authorities started thinking that the Residency Program has to be organized by the National Scientific Societies

  18. Upcoming changes ( 2019) • New Educational Centers • Each center can provide full time training • Two committees (North and South Greece) to evaluate the educational centers • Entry of trainees twice a year (list) • Exit exam twice a year, written and oral (2 exam committees) • Log book • 5 years of training (minimum)

  22. Medical Migration • it is estimated that: • 18,000 doctors have migrated from Greece, during the crisis • Lack of residents in many specialties • Causes of migration: unemployment after residency, overpopulation of doctors in Greece, better salaries in other countries….

  23. We hope in the next years to stop the ''brain drain''
