  1. Discolored or weak teeth and cosmetic purposes are some of the reasons you may need to have a dental crown procedure done.

  2. Knowing your end goal will determine the type of crown you choose.

  3. A family dentist will help you make this decision.

  4. Here are some of the things that you should expect with this procedure.

  5. CHOOSING A CROWN

  6. First, schedule an appointment with your dentist. He or she will go over all your options and explain the pros and cons of the procedure.

  7. The type of crown chosen must be one that your tooth can support.

  8. There are various types of crowns, such as:  Ceramic  Porcelain  Resin  Stainless Steel

  9. Each of these will provide different benefits. However, all crowns offer a solution to a specific dental issue, such as problems caused by an accident, normal wear and tear, or an oral disease.

  10. MULTIPLE DENTAL VISITS

  11. You will typically need to make two trips to the dentist for this procedure. This can vary from dentist-to-dentist.

  12. At the first appointment, the dentist will evaluate your tooth to verify that it can support the crown. After this is done, they will begin filing the tooth down.

  13. Sometimes the tooth can be badly damaged or cracked. If so, it may need to be filled so the tooth will be big enough to support the crown.

  14. Otherwise, the tooth would reject the crown. Remember, if the procedure is not done correctly, it could make the tooth worse, which may lead to severe health issues.

  15. After successfully filing the tooth, your dentist will take an impression. This impression will be used to make the permanent crown.

  16. You will receive a temporary crown to protect your tooth until the permanent one is available. Once the crown is ready, you will have your second appointment.

  17. The first step is removing the temporary crown. Using a special adhesive, your dentist will position and fasten the new crown to the tooth.

  18. This part of the procedure will bring everything together. The crown will only be cemented when you and the dentist agree on the fit.

  19. Remember that once this is done, some changes, such as various shape modifications or colors cannot be made.

  20. WHAT TO DO NEXT?

  21. You will need to take some precautions with your new crown. The dentist will go over a few instructions with you.

  22. For example, you may need to avoid eating sticky or hard food until the crown has enough time to cure.

  23. You will likely experience some numbness for a couple of days. After the numbness has disappeared, you can begin testing the bite of your crown.

  24. If it does not feel right, you will need to contact your dentist immediately.

  25. TAKE TIME TO ADJUST

  26. You may go through a period of adjustment. However, if the procedure is done correctly …

  27. … your new crown will begin to feel like a normal tooth in terms of its function and appearance.
