    10. The Emerging “Hybrid Triple Play” Approach Hybrid Triple Play uses the individual strengths of the satellite and terrestrial worlds strategically. The satellite platform is the most efficient and cost effective in terms of bandwidth and infrastructure for video broadcasting, IP multicasting and distribution ADSL is powerful for two way internet access although sufficient bandwidth may be a problem for video based applications particularly if the DSLAM is far from the end user Thus the two combined into a single platform/box at the end users’ premises enables the total and true triple play experience without the bandwidth constraints or concerns for video

    11. The Emerging “Hybrid Triple Play” Approach This results in a cost effective platform that enables a fast roll out of a reliable triple play service. This has been done in Europe (Orange and Eutelsat), the US (AT&T and Echostar) and Latin America (Telefonica) Analysts (NSR) believe this is the next emerging architecture that should open up a more broadened market for the satellite industry

Baycom Proprietary 13 The Outlook in Middle East & Africa Yahsat’s (Mubadala) two high powered hybrid communications satellites to be launched in 2010 will be a timely and tremendous boost to the market and industry. This is clear evidence of the importance of satellite communications in the Middle Eastern Region. The target is a number of market segments for various applications including high speed internet access, private network services, backhauls for telcos and broadcast. Other satellite operators are launching aggressive plans to expand to keep up with the demand for satellite capacity in the region. Nilesat is procuring a new satellite with 28 transponders which is more than double in number to that of their original satellite. Another big player in the region, Arabsat is aggressively escalating to three new satellites to cater for broadband and other services like High Definition Satellite TV

    14. Baycom Proprietary 14 The Outlook in Middle East & Africa Economic development is spurring government satellite based services.growth potential for broadband in the region is huge. Satellite broadband is a force to be reckoned with in Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Egypt and Morocco and other countries in the region. There are two areas where satellite can aid broadband in the Middle East region: Internet connectivity in the form of trunking to last mile providers using various last mile technologies and telecoms companies who will then use their facilities to reach the end users in areas that are remote and hard to reach by the traditional terrestrial trunking of fibre and DSL copper.

This demand has been the bedrock of VSAT services provider world wide. For the African market: demand for satellite capacity in Africa is skyrocketing and analysts believe that there is a shortage of about 200 transponders (Euroconsult) Internet access, cellular and IP trunking, IPTV and telemedicine are some of the applications that are demanding bandwidth The retirement of a number of Intelsat satellites is contributing to the shortage of satellite capacity despite the launches of Nigcomsat-1 and Rascom QAF-1. MEASAT moved its MEASAT-1 satellite to over Africa (46degrees E) and renamed it Africasat-1 to capitalise on this opportunity

Baycom Proprietary 21 Moving Forward New applications like IPTV and hybrid triple play are the expected strong drivers for broadband in Asia use of satellite for cellular & internet backhauls, single site satellite broadband and VSAT broadband/networking services are the 3 key drivers for growth. However, the traditional VSAT networking market for corporate and government clients remains the cornerstone of the broadband satellite industry and still brings in significant revenues for the VSAT industry VSAT will continue to thrive with traditional applications in Asia e.g. point-of-sale, digital signage, data transfer and distribution, VOIP, distance learning but will grow with emerging bandwidth drivers like IPTV and hybrid triple play

    22. Baycom Proprietary 22 Conclusion The steady growth of around 20% in traditional VSAT and hybrid networks (Futron 2008) will continue and Malaysia should be no exception. The growth will outpace the US in terms of broadband VSATs in 6 to 7 years(NSR). Other regions like the Middle East and Africa will perhaps see higher growth rates Growth drivers will continue to be Cellular Backhauls, IPTV, VOIP, internet and traditional VSATs for corporate/enterprises and government.
