  4. Richard Nixon 37th President Elected in 1968 He accomplished revenue sharing, end of the draft, and a board environmental program. Ran for president three times; 1960, 1968, and 1972 Won twice in 1968 and 1972 Watergate Scandal in 1972

Watergate Scandal Spys broke into the Democratic office in the Watergate building trying to repair wire taping equipment Was not thought to be anything Two journalists for the Washington post; Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, connected it to President Nixon President Nixon denied it until 1974

  6. Three Mile Island 1979 Three mile nuclear power plant near Harrisburg, PA A cooling malfunction caused the core to melt causing an almost fatal catastrophe Induced fear into many nearby residents There was no health issues caused by this meltdown

  13. New Musical Era The Beatles broke up in 1970 Rock n’ Roll started becoming “old news”, disco and punk rock came into the spotlight During the 1970’s Americans spent more money than before on musical entertainment Music started to become a market

Rise of Disco and Punk Rock Clubs with recorded music started to become popular again, and disc jockeys or (DJ’s) always kept the music playing On the other end of the spectrum, punk rock was a fast, non recorded type of music Punk rock used lots of energy and expressive lyrics, however it was not as successful

Anti- War and Equality Music John Lennon was a huge contributor to protest music The song “Give Peace a Chance” by John Lennon was a hit, and spoke bold protests of American society and the Vietnam War “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath and “Peace Train” by Cat Stevens were also very popular anti- war songs Punk Rock music protested the economics and race issues of the country

  20. Caught Red Handed • Men caught breaking into offices of the Democratic National Committee • “The Plumbers” were being paid with funds from Nixon’s campaign organization • Committee that ran organization called CREEP

  21. The Truth Comes Out Informed by high level source known as Deep Throat that white house officials and CREEP hired 50 agents Agents main goal: to sabotage the democrats chances in the 1972 election As more evidence came out, Nixon resigned before he could ultimately be impeached

  22. The Public Shook the public’s faith in politicians America’s self confidence was drained America’s lack in faith in the government was shown through the films created in the 1970’s

  23. The Interview Q: Was there a certain genre of movies that was more popular than the rest? (i.e. inspirational sports films -rocky-, thriller films -jaws- etc) A: A lot of movies were about renegades, or men who would go against the system to solve problems. Dirty Harry was a cop who always broke the rules to get the back guy. Charles Bronson had movies about getting revenge on people when the police couldn't catch them. Since people were made at the government, people liked movies about people who took things into their own hands and solved problems.

  24. Everyday Life • Now that everyone could afford a TV, movies and television were a huge part of everyday life • 3D glasses- watch from home: • “Most exciting- JAWS 3D!!! Everyone rushed to buy 3D glasses- broadcast 3D on television • Stars became bigger, more diverse genres appeared. • Movies like Grease and Saturday Night Fever not only made movies popular, but made John Travolta a teen heart-throb • Thrillers, comedies, action, sports, and musicals were all becoming popular: • “…Rocky was a nice relief- it didn’t use foul language or sexual overtones, it was just inspirational- rooting for the underdog became the American theme.”

Television Shows • First time TV shows started to show diversity • The Jefferson’s- show about a middle class family- showed inter family dynamics (teen rebellion) • Many shows incorporated racial issues as well • The Jefferson’s- the family’s neighbors were African American as well as a interracial married couple • African Americans were shown as being successful and articulate in TV shows- a major change from the previous years

  31. Sports and Politics • Montreal Olympics (1976): • Overshadowed by politics • China threatened to boycott • Taiwan withdrew because Canada would not recognize them as the Republic of China • Arab and African nations did stay away from the games against the presence of New Zealand

Controversial actions • ERA- amendment that would guarantee women’s rights by outlawing gender based discrimination • Defeated because not enough state legislatures passed it( 35 of 38) • Majority of Americans agreed women needed a guarantee of equal rights • Affirmative action- giving preference to ethnic minorities and women in admissions and hiring's. • Universities, fire departments, and large companies

  33. Fear Actions caused fear among Americans Changing roles Traditional family lifestyle Men would abandon family responsibilities due to women having a more prominent role Take away achievements of previous women rights movement

  34. Opposition • Opposition to ERA came mainly from conservative religious and political organizations • Christians, Mormons, Jews, Catholics • Both men and women • Pro-ERA groups failed to refute the opposition, causing confusion

Results of Vietnam War • 350,000 casualties, 58,000 died • Congress created the War Powers Act • Requires the president to receive approval from congress before sending American troops across seas • Northern Vietnam industrial and transportation systems were destroyed • Southern Vietnam land was destroyed from bombing and chemicals • Caused a lot of war debt
