  5. Your Academic Performance: Importance in Teacher Recommendations In recommending what course they believe you should take in your sophomore year, teachers will consider your: • Grades & progress throughout the year • Effort • Self-discipline • Responsibility • Goals & Interests • Feel free to email teachers directly with questions

  6. Important Options to Consider for Next Year…. • English 10 Honors or Academic • AP World History or World History Academic • Math – what’s your recommended course? • Science – Biology Honors or Academic • Are you currently in Earth Science Honors? • Continuing in a foreign language • From a college perspective, discontinuing a foreign language after freshman year is not a good idea! • Continuing in an elective • It is most important to find BALANCE in your life

  7. Your Academic Performance: Importance in College Admission • Your grades & the difficulty of the courses you take are the two most important factors in college admission decisions • Activities, recommendations, and application essays are important and allow you to set yourself apart from others, BUT... your grades and the rigor of your courses will be what determines whether a college will consider you a competitive candidate

  8. What Colleges Look for in applicants

  9. What JMU has to say… “The Admissions Committee is most interested in the quality of the applicant's high school program of study. Students with solid achievement in four or more academic courses each year of high school will have a distinct advantage in the admission process. Competitive candidates for admission will have taken upper level coursework (i.e. Honors, AP, IB, Dual Enrollment) in the core academic areas when available in their high school. Competitive candidates will have mostly As and Bs in the core academic areas: English, math, lab science, social science and foreign language. While we focus on the individual grades in each core academic class the admissions committee notes the high school grade point average and class rank if reported by the high school.” http://www.jmu.edu/admissions/process/freshman.shtml

  10. Academic Transcript • Freshman year is the foundation of your academic transcript! • Your transcript includes: • Classes taken each year • Semester 1, Semester 2, and Final Grades in each class • Credits earned • Verified credits earned (passing the class & the SOL) • Absences each year • Grade Point Average • Class Rank
