  1. Mercury Beam DumpSimulations - Progress so far Tristan Davenne Rutherford Appleton Laboratory STFC 16th September 08 UKNF Meeting Trinity College Oxford

  2. NUFACT Feasibility Study

  3. Agitation of mercury pool surface due to impinging mercury jet 2 phase CFX model mercury jet velocity = 20m/s Angle of attack = 5.7° mercury pool surface area = 0.05m2

  4. Agitation of mercury pool surface due to MERIT proton beambeam energy = 24GeVbunches in a pulse = 4 protons per pulse = 30 Terra protons pulse duration = 2.3ustotal energy deposition in mercury in a pulse = 8kJ

  5. Summary • Simulations of the impact of the mercury jet and particle beam on the mercury beam dump are underway. • Preliminary runs suggest high velocity mercury splashes will be caused. • Addition of submerged tungsten ball packed beds and covers may mitigate any potential problems due to splashing. • Propose further detailed simulation to evaluate whether or not mercury agitation will pose practical problems.
