  1. CIRCULATORY SYSTEM BLOOD

  2. Functions of Blood • Transport • O2, glucose, amino acidsto cells • CO2 and urea from cells to lungs and kidneys • Hormone messages from endocrine gland to target

  3. Functions of Blood • Wound Healing • Platelets and proteins (ex. fibrinogenfibrin) • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--bZUeb83uU

  4. Functions of Blood • Heating and Cooling • Vasoconstriction conserves heat to core • Vasodilation dissipates heat at the skin surface

  5. Functions of Blood • Immune System • Bacteria • Fungi • Viruses • Foreign tissue rejection

  6. Components of Blood • Plasma • Straw coloured • Water concentration varies (hydration level) • Makes up 55% of blood volume • Dissolved O2, CO2

  7. Components of Blood • Red Blood Cells (erythrocytes) • Made in bone marrow • Squished spheres • No nucleus • Filled with hemoglobin which binds with O2

  8. Components of Blood • White Blood Cells (leukocytes) • Produced in bone marrow • Mature in thymus • Have a nucleus • Macrophages engulf by phagocytosis • Granulocytes & Agranulocytes • http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=PXUNEJkjQt4

  9. Components of Blood • Platelets (thrombocytes) • Cell fragments • Stick to wounds in the blood vessels to initiate clot

  10. Try This! Computer • Activity D5 – Quick Lab: Blood Components • http://media.pearsoncmg.com/intl/pec/school/synapse/biologysource/biology11/shell/resource.php?resource=ACT_ch11_D5_blood.htm

  11. Microscopes • Examining Blood Cells Microscope Activity

  12. D6 Case Study • Blood Doping???

  13. CIRCULATORY SYSTEM BLOOD VESSELS

  14. Blood Vessels • Arteries carry blood away from the heart • Veins carry blood to the heart • Capillaries form a network between arteries and veins to distribute materials to cells and collect waste.

  15. Arteries • Thick muscular walls • Strong connective tissue • Round diameter • No valves • High pressure

  16. Veins • Some muscle • Some connective tissue, thicker layer than muscle • Thin walls • Irregular diameter • Low pressure • Valves prevent backflow

  17. Capillaries • No muscle layer or connective tissue • Walls one cell thick • Medium to low pressure

  18. Microscope • Using the microscope draw an artery & vein!!

  19. Homework • Pg. 302 #1~3 • Pg. 304 #1,2 • Pg. 306 # 1~3 • Pg. 308 #1~3 • Pg. 309 #2,3,5,6,13,14,16,17
