  1. 68% of our power is created using fossil fuels as this shows. Fossil Fuels By Holly, Louise and Atiyyah

  2. What is a fossil fuel? Something is a fossil fuel if when it burns it releases lots of energy and is formed from animals and plants that lived hundreds of years ago.

  3. What do we use it for? We use fossil fuels to: • Power our cars • Power the central heating in our homes • Powers most power stations • Generally, it powers most things!

  4. Types of fossil fuels There are different types of fossil fuels such as: • Coal • Oil (eg. Petrol and diesel) • Gas

  5. Advantages and disadvantages of fossil fuels Advantages Disadvantages • It create very large amounts of electricity in one place fairly cheaply • Transporting oil and gas to power stations is easy • Gas- fired power stations is very efficient • A fossil fuelled power station can be built anywhere • Creates a lot of pollution • Burning coal creates carbon dioxide • Mining coal can be difficult and dangerous • Coal- fired power stations need lots of fuel • It can cause global warming

  6. Why are fossil fuels important? We use fossil fuels in our everyday lives and it helps us create synthetic materials. Synthetic materials are objects that we make and are NOT natural. They make many of our clothes and lots of plastics.

  7. The sciencey stuff! How do fossils fuels form? Usually, dead plants and animals are slowly changed into carbon dioxide, water and other oxides by bacteria. If dead plants and animals are kept away from oxygen, though, it wont rot the normal way. Instead plants changed into coal and animals changed into oil and natural gas but this process takes over millions and millions of years!

  8. Now watch this clip! This clip will help talk about fossil fuels: http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone/clips/the-use-and-impact-of-fossil-fuels/4413.html
