  2. How are estuaries connected to oceanic organisms? • Estuaries are located where rivers meet the oceans. • The water here is brackish (salt mixed with fresh). • The water here is warmer and calmer. • It is a nursery for many ocean organisms. This means that they lay their eggs in the calmer estuaries and when the “babies” get big enough, they swim back to the ocean!

  3. Upwelling… • Upwelling occurs along the shoreline. • The warmer water at the surface cools and sinks. • The cold water from the bottom is forced to the surface. It brings nutrients from the bottom with it. • The phytoplankton use the nutrients for photosynthesis. • There is an influx of fish here (fisherman would have a great catch!)

  4. What type of technology would be used to look at algae blooms? • Algae blooms happen at areas of upwelling. • We can see algae blooms using satellite imagery.

  5. Which layer of the ocean allows for photosynthesis to occur because of sunlight penetration? • This could be called several different things.. • PHOTIC refers to the top 200 meters of the ocean. The sunlight penetrates the PHOTIC zone. You may also see this called the SURFACE ZONE. • The neritic zone also allows sunlight to penetrate. But remember, it ends at the continental shelf!

What is the basis of open ocean food webs and provides the majority of the world’s oxygen supply? • All food webs start with a PRODUCER! • The open ocean is the PELAGIC ZONE. • Remember that PHOTOSYNTHESIS creates OXYGEN. • PHYTOPLANKTON use sunlight to photosynthesize. When they photosynthesize, they create food for themselves, and OXYGEN FOR US!

Which zone of the ocean extends from the low tide line to the edge of the continental shelf? • NERITIC ZONE! • The intertidal zone goes from the high tide to the low tide. • The neritic zone picks up at the low tide and ends at the continental slope. • The pelagic zone picks up at the beginning of the continental slope and is the WHOLE OPEN OCEAN.

  8. What can you infer about an organism that lives in the rocky Intertidal zone? • This is for sure an EOG question. • Organisms that live between the high tide and low tide lines must be able to be wet when the water is HIGH and dry when the water is LOW!

  9. Why is ocean water more dense that fresh water? • Ocean water has salts and minerals dissolved in it. Therefore, it has more MASS in the same amount of volume!!! • Remember: Density = mass / volume

  10. Which of the following correctly describes the connection between estuarian terrestrial and aquatic food web ? • This is also a definite EOG question. • Terrestrial means an organism that lives on land (bear, bird, human, etc.) • Aquatic means an organism that lives in the water (fish, plankton, shark, etc.) • If there is a connection between the two food webs, then that means a terrestrial organism must be CONSUMING an aquatic organism, or vice versa. That would be like a bird scooping down and eating a fish!

  11. What is happening at a mid-ocean ridge? • Two tectonic plates are moving away from each other. As they pull apart, magma is able to rise to the surface and as it cools, it makes new crust.

  12. What is happening at a deep ocean trench? • The ocean plate is colliding with the continental plate. • The ocean plate is more dense than the continental plate, so it SUBDUCTS or goes underneath. • As the ocean plate sinks, it is burned up by the heat and turns into magma.
