  1. MondayAugust 11, 2014 Begin your SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) time. You have 20 minutes. Get out your writer’s notebooks (composition books).

  2. “A sentence should be alive… Sentences need energy to make the meaning jump off the page and into the reader’s head. As a writer you must embed energy in the sentence-coil the spring, set the trap. -Peter Elbow, Writing with Power MondayAugust 11, 2014Cognitive Commodity #1: What do you notice about this sentence? Matt winces. -Nancy Farmer, House of the Scorpion Also… If you did not turn in your Classroom Procedures or any other forms, please pull them out, and I will take them up.

  3. Open up your writer’s notebook (composition book) • First, write “Table of Contents” on the top line. • Next, draw a line along the left hand side of the page (line it up with the one that is already there for the margin) and put “Page #” as the title of that column. • Now, write “Title” over the longer section to the right of the page number column (look at the following slide).

  4. Table of Contents Page # Title

Now for our first assignment 1) Write Pg. 1 on the left hand column. 2) Under the Title, write My First Sentence 3) You will now flip to page 1 and write your title on the top line (center it, please) 4) Go to the top right hand corner and draw a “1”, so you know that it is the first page 5) Your turn to jot down the first sentence that comes to your mind.

Help each other out!

  11. What are Mrs. Lareau’s rewards?? • C.H.I.P.= Caught Having Impressive Performance • Brownie Points (let me know if you have an allergy to brownies, and I will figure out another reward for you.

  12. Library We go to check out and return books every two weeks. There is an AWESOME lounge where students are able to sit and read, but make sure you have no pens or pencils with you! We want to keep it nice for Mrs. Lee. OUR CLASSROOM LIBRARY: You may check out books whenever you would like, but you must complete an index card with the book name, your name, and the date you checked it out.

  13. Some pretty relevant questions… • How should we line up to go somewhere? • What happens when I need a tissue or need to sharpen my pencil if we can’t get out of our desks? • Can we go to the bathroom as many times as we want? • How do we behave and do we have certain tasks when we are completing group work?

  14. Review: How are we dismissed? How do we line up? What do I do if I was absent from English class and missed work? How may points will it count off if I leave my homework at home or turn it in a day late? What is the deal with bathroom passes? How may do I have? How do I check out Mrs. Lareau’s library books? How often do we go to the school library?

  15. Essential Question for Unit 1 How do we decide who we are? Let’s write!!!!! Nothing too difficult, but you will need your composition books! Make pg. 2 and title it “How do we decide Who we are?” Writing prompt (you have 7 minutes): Compile a list of 10 things that make someone who he or she is.

  16. Brain Break… Can you save Fred??? Fred, the gummy worm, can’t swim. So, he always has to wear a life preserver (the ring). However, his boat (the cup) capsized over before he put on his life preserver. It is your job to work together to get the life preserver on Fred, and the only rule is you cannot touch Fred, his boat, or the life preserver with your hands. The only “tool” you can use is the paper clip. What kind of team work and strategies could help you with this problem?
