  1. Biomechanical study of upper-limb exoskeleton for resistance training with three-dimensional motion analysis system Tzong-Ming Wu, PhD; Dar-Zen Chen, PhD

  2. Aim • Present experimental study of novel spring-loaded upper-limb exoskeleton that enables limb movement at multiple joints in different planes for resistance training in free and unconstrained environment. • Relevance • Prolonged life expectancy will lead to increased occurrences of age-related health problems such as chronic disease. • Rehabilitation devices must keep pace with care standards, be cost effective, and meet home-based training requirements of today’s rehabilitation trends.

  3. Method • To assess functionality of the design, we have measured its kinematic data while performing designated movements and adopted a motion-capture system to verify the function of our mechanism.

  4. Results • Collected data and analysis of kinematic and dynamic joint torques verify our mechanism is effective.

  5. Conclusion • This device may provide understanding of design requirements for appropriate spring-loaded exoskeleton for upper-limb resistance training.
