Biography loislowry Birthplace:Hawaii Birth Date: March 20, 1937 Parents:Robert & Katherine Hammersburg Education: Brown University, University of Southern Maine • She married after her sophomore year at Brown and had four children. They settled in Maine where she finished her degree at USM. Her father was in the Army so her family moved around a lot. Lois has lived all around the world.

  4. L o i s L o w r y “She fulfilled a childhood dream when she began writing in the mid-1970’s” • She’s a well-known author. Her books include the Anastasia Krupnik series, Number the Stars, Gathering Blue, Son, and Messenger. • Twice the winner of the Newbery Medal • She has tackled a number of topics in her literature including adoption, mental illness, cancer, the Holocaust and futuristic societies. Whatever the theme, Lowry portrays realistic life experiences to her audience.

  6. tone vs. mood • Tone - author’s attitudetoward the writing (characters, the situation) and the readers. - can have more than one tone - can be both serious and humorous Tone is set by the setting, choice of vocabulary and other details. • Mood - general atmosphere created by the author’s words • the feeling the reader gets from reading • USUALLY remains the same throughout story, but it can change

  8. Utopia vs dystopia Setting – time and place of the story DYSTOPIA UTOPIA Utopia is a perfect place where people can lead perfect lives. The Giver takes place in such an ideal community. Dystopia is a place where there is great suffering or injustice, typically one that is futuristic and maintained through dictatorship. House of the Scorpions takes place in such a society. • Characteristics of a Utopian: Society: • Beautiful society • No violence • Poverty and misery do not exist • Few laws • Money is not necessary • People only do work that they enjoy and which benefits everyone • Everyone is treated equally – “Sameness” • Characteristics of a Dystopian: Society: • Dictatorship • Violence • Technology replaces humanity • Negative social trends taken to extreme • Citizens have fear of outside world • Citizens under constant surveillance • People living in a degraded world

  10. Characters: Jonas – PROTAGONIST; careful, thoughtful, pale-eyed; almost 12 years old 2. Jonas’s mother – works for Department of Justice and is depicted as smart, rational, and a no-nonsense” woman who cares about status and reputation 3. Jonas’s father – works at the Nurturing center, where he cares for the community’s babies; depicted as gentle and quiet 4. Lily – Jonas’s sister; about to turn 8; assertive, outspoken, blunt, rude 5. Gabriel – baby boy that is being cared for by Jonas’s father; not growing fast, trouble sleeping 6. Asher- friend of Jonas about to turn 12; lots of fun to play with and he struggles with precise language 7. Fiona- Jonas’s friend and classmate; she’s almost 12; gentle, caring, loves to volunteer in the House of the Old 8. Committee of Elders – makes rules of the community and decides the fate of the residents; select job assignments

  11. DO NOW - TUESDAY • What do you think the title, The Giver, means? • Look at the picture on the front cover: • Describe the man. • What does the expression on his face indicate? • What do you think the torn photo means?

  12. DO NOW: Wednesday: In Jonas’s society, children are required to spend a certain amount of hours volunteering. Why do you think this is? What are they hoping to learn from this experience? Thursday: Predict – what will Jonas receive at the Ceremony of Twelve?
